We just pitched on a gravel pitch. We used a footprint under to protect and glad we did. I would pitch on gravel again as the camp was worth it.
Most pitches in the states are hardstanding so I'm used to it, we never even used protection and never had any probs.
Just take the necessary precautions and you will be fine. Look for sharp stones and remove sticks before pitching.
