Wow - I'm stunned

We camped for the first time last year in a pre pitched tent and my 2 boys then 10 months and 4 slept in one room and myself and OH in the other.  It never entered my head that we might do it defferently.

This year we have a trailor tent and again I never even considered anything other than them in one pod and us in the other.  In fact, after the first night where they killed each other the 5 year old went into an underbed tent - we referred to him as the cave troll from there on and our younger boy - just turned two slep on his own in the second bed pod.  Mind you - I sleep very lightly and just the sound of them turning in the bed wakes me, there's no way I wouldn't hear a zip being opened if one of them was trying to do a runner.

I have to admit that I never even considered that they would sleep with us

Well the first time I took my daughters camping in 1991 when I didn't have very much money, the three of us squeezed into a two person ridge tent, my eight year old daughter slept with a box at her feet because she was the shortest!

The following year I bought a smallish frame tent and put the daughters (and later my son as well) in the frame tent and self in the small ridge tent. My perception was that were there anyone dodgy around they'd look in the small tent for children rather than in the big one.

I've always believed that personal space is essential for camping so now I have the Aruba with one or two people sleeping in it and for all of us to sit in if it's cold or if it rains but the rest of us sleep in our own small tents.

This also keeps mess under control and makes it easier to pack up.

Take care

R

our son is 6 yrs old and has only just started sleeping through the night. When at home i would just get into bed with him so we all got sleep. Sheer laziness on my part i know , but i knew he would grow out of it eventually.

When we started camping he was only 4 so there was no question of him not sleeping with us.We even bought our first tent with a 4 bedroom for all of us and a 2 bedroom for when he is older and wants to sleep alone. The other reason we will keep him with us this year is that he has nightmares when we are camping and becomes vocal, shouting etc. He only does it when he is really tired and i like to be able to calm him down.

I think it is down to individual concerns and your own child. i can relax totally when we are together not so sure when he is on his own. Perhaps it is me with the problem

Thanks everyone for your views - like most of you have said, I'll just see how he is when we get there and take it from there.
