Would definitely recommend going for one with two burners and a grill underneath. The grill is the important bit - you can't go camping and not have toast in the morning!
Ours runs off a small calor gas bottle. When you buy, check whether the regulator is included as one will cost about £10. Then expect to pay a deposit of approx £25 for the bottle plus maybe £15 for the gas. I know this seems quite alot of outlay to begin with but I think its cheaper in the long run than the cookers which run off small cartridges. We've had our current bottle for 4 trips and its not empty yet!
Certainly would echo what bumblebee says about a twin gas burner with gas bottle & regulator but many of the grills are not very good. So no toast for me, cook pancakes for brekkie instead!
If you do want a cooker with grill then I think that the Camping Gaz is best as the grill is ceramic - very effective.
However, a lot depends on how much camping you are going to do. The cheap suitcase ones are cheap to buy but the gas is expensive. If you are going to camp frequently then do consider the Coleman duel fuel; they doen't have a grill but there are other ways of doing toast.
Gotta say that I'm dead impressed with the coleman dual-fuel twin burner.
I've never seen so much heat off a burner before. The bars were glowing red!
And the fuel is much cheaper, universally available [Via a small petrol can] and much lighter to carry around.

I have the camping gaz chef with the grill underneath for me the hubby and the 2 kids, the grill is not to bad only prob is you can only really make one bit of toast at a time, but for convienence etc I think it is quite good, ie boiling kettle and making brekky at same time!! We got ours from Go Outdoors for £40 and it includes a carry bag and regulator,(friends paid the same for just the cooker) it was about £45 for the gas but that was the deposit for the bottle, if you have a gas bbq then you can use the gas for that depending on the make of the bottle you might need to buy another regulator.
Most camping stove grills are useless. I use this gizmo which sits on a top ring. It makes delicious toast unlike the camping stove grills which reduces toast to the texture of a biscuit.
We have the campingaz 2 ring gas stove. It comes with a griddle pan that you put over the rings, so can be used for breakfast or bbqs(i use it as my home bbq, its that good!). We found ours on Fleabay for £39.99 which is much better than the £70 rrp.
As for the gas.......go and ask at your local tip/recycle centre and quite often they will give you a gas bottle. Ours came with a regulator too, and was full!!!
I have 2 of the gas cartridge single burners too, and I like my tea/coffee and cannot be bothered waiting for 20 odd minutes for the kettle to boil!

My personal preference is for a liquid fueled stove. I don't like the waste with gas canisters nor the weight or uncertainty of quantity with gas tanks. I've yet to encounter cold weather performance issues with gas but believe it can be a problem, (up a mountain side in sub zero weather type stuff).

Almost all of these stoves were purchased 2nd hand off eBay. The Svea 123 is still being manufactured and similar Primus type stoves (3 legged, brass tank) are still available new from Base Camp, in the UK.
Also, the Coleman 424, as mentioned elsewhere, would be a choice, if I didn't already have the Optimus 22.
As you can see, different stoves for different situations, each one the best for their chosen use and each capable of a beautiful flame.
