Hi all
Should we be concerned about the wind when camping.
[[NO]] just be prepared. Some family tents are far better at standing up to the wind than others, If you are lucky enough to be the owner of a Karston, DeWaard , or any other make of pyramid cotton canvas tent then you just forget about winds in the UK. The cotton frame tents will stand a lot of strong gusty winds, the cabanon bisquay tunnel design and strength is also very stable as we have been informed by owners on this forum, the better made tunnel tents with metal poles and strengtheners will stand up to fairly strong winds and the basic fiberglass pole tunnel and dome tents are fine in normal UK summer weather.
So how can we tell if we are likely to be going to a camp site that we COULD experience strong winds.
As we all know the wind can and does change direction
but as a rule in the England and wales the prevailing winds come from the South West.
And all coast lines that face south west will see the wind coming off the sea, were it can build up strength unopposed by land terrain.
Another good pointer these days is the appearance of wind farms 3 on Anglesy[:o
So if you are going to and exposed site on the South or west coast,or for that matter winds from the east coast coming off the sea. Keep checking the weather forecast for wind speeds the ones to worry about are force 7 upwards these are near gale force with wind speeds of 32 to 38 mph.
Check the Beaufort Wind Scale for more information on wind speeds.
Very few tents get blown down or damaged on inland sites in the UK if they are properly pegged down.
What would I do if I were camping on the west coast on an exposed site, and they forecast a Storm force 10 speeds of 55 to 63 mph winds from the SW. I would get my tent down as quickly as possible and packed away in the trailer and spend the night in the car then put it up again after the storm.
Most of this post is my own opinion,
as no tent makers only Karston are prepared to say what their tents will stand up to,I believe Karston claim that their tents will be safe in Hurricane wind speeds
all the best

We just decamped today in winds that were (according to met office) gusting at 48mph. Apparently they got up to 58mph just after we left. It was scary - I put the kids in the car while 3 of us got the tent down. I have to say I don't think it would have stood up to the wind for much longer than it did. We were caught out as the forecast was that it was improving.
Also when we pitched the tent a week ago there was no wind at all so we didn't put it the right way round. Have learnt a lesson there.
Off to look at the makes mentioned as we are getting a new tent for next summer:)
BE PREPARED ,the scouts moto. Long range weather forecasts for wind directions and strength, extra guy ropes , using Clingons , stronger pegs like Deltas ( Sorry there are non like Deltas) a spare pole or a sleeve that can be but over a broken pole and duck tape. In a nutshell all that rexgrant has so masterful put

Rex - I received my line-loks today, excellent prompt service, but I cant use them on the Montana 6, or not many. A few guys are 'normal' in that they have one end attached to a triangle of fabric, the other goes to the peg, but most of them and all the main ones are fixed to the tent at both ends, so the line-lok will not work unless I cut the guy and make it 2 separate ones - not sure whether that is sensible - what do you think ? The canopy which is more susceptible to wind does have 'normal' guy lines so I have replaced all the sliders on that and they are much easier to use as well as more stable.
Hi CM.
These are the guys that double up onto one peg, Don't they have a guy adjuster on the guy rope. I am not familiar with the guying of the Outwell tents and can not advise you on that one, but If they fit an adjuster then I am sure they must be someway to replace it.
I sure someone with knowledge of outwell tents with be along with the correct advice.
All the Best
Rex.
