I once read that all you need is 2 items - WD40 and Duck Tape
If it moves and shouldn't............ use Duck Tape
If doesn't move and should............ use WD40

it can be as big as you like but the problem comes when you find its something not in it is needed
we have a blue box we leave in the TT (about 1ft x 1ft x 18") it contains spares for the tent (guy ropes ,frame springs ,push buttons ,several sizes of those screw dooda's that lock sliding poles ,the toilet chemicals in small use once sized bottles in case we empty the toilet mid week ,all the little fastenings that break on tents etc) spare batteries ,a mini maglite ,spare gas washers and jubilee clips and a spare spanner ,seam sealant ,some spray waterproofer ,spare mantels ,airbed repair kit and a sewing kit etc.
as for real tools (spanners etc) i have a good toolkit in the car
