I've been reading about the elaborate arrangements for sleeping, matresses with different bits and bobs both underneath and on top BEFORE the nice cosy sleeping bag, mainly it seems to me to keep the cold ground at bay. Big question for me though is, is a self inflating sleeping mat enough when weight and size of kit is an issue due to no car? Or is there something VERY small and lightweight that will go underneath and improve the insulation?

Thanks

After years of sleeping badly on airbeds and sleeping mats, I invested in a Vango XL self inflating mat and had the best nights sleep ever at the weekend. Dead comfy and warm - didn't need anything else, just a pillow and sleeping bag!

I bought a couple of Fat Airics last year and, being a chilly mortal, took loads of bedding when I went off on my own a couple of weeks ago. That was a waste of time. The only time I got cold was the night we were on a sloping pitch and I rolled off Airic onto the floor of the tent. They really do offer adequate insulation.

Thanks guys.

Looks like the mats should be o.k., probably a case of try and see and if not sort something else out.

The Fat Airics are out I think, when I googled and had a look at 'em they don't seem to be suitable for carrying around.
