You could always use a tarp (and poles) to create a windbreak.  Does look more like a tent than a barricade.  If I have to cook in a windy spot it's always worked for me.

For all the reasoning behind using windbreaks as given above...why do they have to be so large?  Several metres of break does seem a lot just to shield a cooker.
