Following on from my recent post about heaters, I was wondering if anyone has used this (or similar) and what the thoughts about how effective they are - basically are they warm enough for winter or are they more for chilly summer and autumn evenings.

When we "tented" we tried one of these heaters - OK if you were directly in front of it and less than 6 ft / 2 m away.
If you were out of "line of sight" then no good at all. It does not heat the air at all just the things or bodies it radiates onto.

Hi Northernman,

Yes I've got one, though the reflective surface rusted up over the winter (put it in the greenhouse - Doh!)

I like the fact that it has 3 settings, 400, 800 & 1200 watts - which means you can still use it in camps that only have a 6 amp circuit. It also gets hot immediately and puts out a cosy warm red glow.

But as Fatbelly says, it works best when you're close, although it does make a difference to the overall temperature too. I can't leave it on overnight because the glow disturbs me - I like it dark.

Since I've ruined mine I'll probably replace it with a 2Kw fan heater on grounds of saving space, although I'll miss the glow.

hi all,

camped with one these in oct/nov last year, wasn't great but in fairness we had some hard frosts, taking a fan heater next time.

I have one but as said, it's only for the more chilly moments, not to drive the wintery cold from your tent or shed. I've bought a kerosene heater, now.

We have one and used it at the end of September and it kept our tent nice and warm, although later in the evening we did need to move it closer in front of where we were sitting.  These are great if the hook up is less than 10amps but we are going to invest in an oscillating fan heater aswell for more powerful hook ups.

We have used one of these for three years now and it`s ok for chilly summer evenings, but I doubt it would keep you warm in temps less than 10c. We also quite like the warm glow as its enough for my grandchildren to be able to use the porta potty through the night.

I use the halogen heater in the van awning.. and convector heater in the van..my awning is a porch one so the halogen heats it up fairly well..and provides a nice warm glow for chilly summer evenings..Used to use the halogen in my rather large TT awning but had to supliment it with either the gas rings on the cooker on (cooker in the awning of TT) or with a small s/hand workmans gas fire left on in the awning while we were up..Turned it off when going to bed..Cant say I was exactly toasty with both on in the TT awning..but always managed....

Jelboy.
