Bigger Breakfast, I think if you bend it in more like a horse shoe it might go in? your talking ring and pin, or the end of the pole that goes into the metal eye in the webbing
one tip is to make sure all the pole sections are fully slotted together, it only takes a few mm. on each section , to add enough extra length to the pole, to make it very difficult to insert the pin.
a touch of silicon spray on the ends of the poles helps them to slot in.
"son of a gun" pump spray is a good one , available from most good motor factors,
I found with my tent the stiffness seems to be with them being new! You either get them in first time or a struggle. Once I had used my tent 4 or 5 times it did get easier. Although first time one person was holdong the other end and another was trying to slide the fabric along just enough to give me the extra.

Someone posted some time ago that it's easier if you stand with your back to the tent rather than facing it.
I take it you tried all the obvious things: the poles are all fully pushed home; the pole isn't caught up in the sleeve. This can easily happen and causes mayhem.
Our porch awning is three years old and has the pins and it has not got any easier.I am sure they make the straps shorter on purpose, i am going to cut half an inch off the bottom of the poles.
I do the first end of the pole but OH has to do the other - I injured a thumb a couple of years ago (not a camping related incident!!) and now just don't have the feeling or grip to push / pull and manoeuvre fiddly things!!
