Hi all, I have only just come accross this great community and have spent all night reading, it seems like a really nice site so, hello all!
Anyway, I used to camp with my brother many moons ago, but as a rule never used campsites, we would find ourselves a clearing in the middle of a forrest and hope no park rangers or land owners turned up
Anyway, time has moved on and I now have kids of my own and I am taking them (and the wife) camping for their first time. We are going to a fairly popular site and so I am prepared for plenty of other people to be there, but it has occured to me, do I need to worry about security?
We are very much planning to be out and about in Bournemouth/Weymouth in the day so do I need to worry about people helping themselves to my gear (or even my whole tent )?
The site says that it has wardens and its a family orientated site, what do you guys n gals think?
We have never had a problem like most others . Just lock any valuables in your car that you cant carry and zip up the tent when your out. As people have said before locking/pad-locking your tent is pointless . If someone wants to steel your stuff they will slash it open . I dont know anyone that this has ever happened to btw!
Theft on site is rare thankfully. most campers look out for each other .
general camping gear is left in the tent, but obviously you wouldn't leave cash, phones ipods cameras DS games etc lying around, lock them in the boot of the car.
Some people ask if its worth padlocking the tent, the answer is not really . It might attract a would be thief if they thought you had something inside worth locking up.
A determined thief will just slash the tent to get what he wants anyway.
If the worst was to happen , I'd rather be robbed and not have the tent cut as well.

Welcome Lovespuds. As said above, there's no pint locking a tent. A Stanley knife would be much quicker and quieter than a zip. The only thing I've ever had stolen was a couple of mackerel we were going to have for breakfast and which we left outside in a bucket. We saw the thieves making off with them - a couple of seagulls!!
The best security is other campers. Make friends with them - and I don't mean immediately inviting them in for a slap-up meal and drinks party. Just say hello to them as they pass is enough. Some members of our family once visited us on a campsite and they arrived earlier than expected while we were out shopping. We got back to find them virtually being held hostage by our neighbours who wouldn't let them into our tent till we got back.

Have to say I, talking to people here, and hearing how friendly most people who camp are, I am getting pretty excited to get out camping. If my wife didn't work on weekends I would probably be out and about now!
I used to hate working weekends in the summer, more so if the sun was shining . I would go to site a couple of miles away on Friday evening and go to work saturday morning from site. My boss thought I was mad.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
