After I'm after peoples opinion on how much wind a tent can take. We had a bad experience last year when our newly purchased Argos tent ripped/collapsed in the wind straight after setting up! Looking to go away in our now new Gelert tent but notice the winds are quite strong.
Whats the advice around the wind speeds, i.e. at what speed (MPH) should we decide to stay at home?
Our Vango Tigris 800 + canopy stood up to 30-40+mph winds last week with no problems. It was not a particularly nice experience though - The tent coped with it far better than we did!
We went camping near Brothers Water in the Lakes saturday till this monday and our tent got quite a bashing! I think wind was predicted at being 30 mph. The tent stood up to it (a five person dome type - make - Coleman) but I had a couple of relatively sleepless nights! It was still roughly in one piece when we took it down, save for a couple of the ties being ripped off thanks to all the buffeting but I can see another night might have finally done it in!
We were camping in Devon last weekend in gale force winds. Our Vango Orchy 500 coped fine but the noise of the wind was rubbish so we packed up first thing and checked into a B&B.
We won't be camping in high wind again, there's no point because it's not fun.
At least we tested its durability!
Also, big up to North Morte Farm campsite - brill.
We got caught in the new forest a few weekends ago in our Diablo 600XP. The wind was reported at 50mph gusts and I wouldn't disagree it was a tad hairy !!!
However with the car parked across the path of the wind and the guy lines double pegged ready for the onslaught we sat tight expecting the worst. However the diablo took it all with no problems through the night and well into the following morning before it died down.
No snapped poles no tears and even had a good nights sleep so in a way it did us a favour and next time we wont panic as much.
