jayandruth's point is valid and their maths almost correct (with the extension the Trout Lake is more like 3x8). The reason is that the Trout Lake is a much more efficient shape than the Maryland XXL. Tunnel tents compared to "spider-pod" tents always are more efficient in their use of ground.
wow that has really shocked me how the 2 tents differ in size as they are both pretty meaty!!!!!
i am suprised the 'spider-pod'tents sell so well with this size in mind!!!!
i wasnt dissing jaynruth i am just really shocked at the difference
------------- A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

none taken gilly....my point was simple.it justlooks like just another excuse to squeeze more cash out of people.what next? ... charged for use of windbreaks???
Trout lake with extension is 6.3m long by 3.1 meters wide (see my pics on post your tent pics thread on tent advice) - so quite correct is just over 18m sq. It is an efficient use of space and like I said on my earlier post fits well into most campsites maximum permitted pitch size. I love the "old trout"!

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. You are correct. My maths was out on the 8m thing.
Some sites do charge for extensions and canopies, I have noticed it whilst using the camp site search facility on this site, at least if you know beforehand you can then make the decision on whether to book that site or not. We are going to get away this weekend and the site I have in mind charges £2:00 per night for the canopy, at least it is clearly stated on their web page, try to always read the T&C's that way you get no nasty surprises.
In all my years camping I don't think I have ever had my tent inspected for size, pup tent or number of campers..I do tend to go for the smaller farmers field sort of sites though.... this may have been done discretely however....
I figure an extension is part of a tent... Don't see why I should pay extra to use it... Like an earlier poster, I always tell sites the maximum dimensions of my tent with the extension included...
If I was on-site and the owner wanted extra cash, I'd take the extension down, but leave my kitchen appliances that live in it exactly where they were, granted they would not protected from the weather, but they would be taking up exactly as much space as I was with the extension. Just to prove the point that I shouldn't be paying. Would the owner ask me to move my bin, cooker, storage boxes and table? Doubt it.
I really don't think they would ask for the extra money. Most sites charge extra for awnings, utility tent, gazebos and pup tents. IMO an extension can not be classed as an extra tent, as it is by its nature part of and/or attached to the tent. To be fair, an awning can be classed as this too, but that's for a separate thread...
Have just looked at the price's .... £2.50 for your car - never heard that one before - and extra car yes, but not the only one you have
So if they don't charge for an extra tent .... maybe he should have taken two instead of much smaller extention .....
He thought it was more space saving for cooking under cover if raining, than having a separate tent
I think the extention is a rip off - not a lot of extra room, for a lot of MY money (was Chrissie pressie) lol
Personally we stay clear of site's that have lots of add ons .... rather have unit, 2 adults & 2 kids included in the price .... even through we are less bodies wise
we have just bought a tent for the first time at the age of 50 odd and we are wondering about all the things about sizes and the extra costs. we bought a gelert horizon 8 (yes for two people) my wife does not want to be claustrophobic any way it was all feet and inches when we were at school. the info that came with the tent states length 740 cmx 350cm we have a porch that fits on the 350cm side i worked out that the 740 cm is actually 7.5 metres or there abouts and the 350cm is 3.5 metres am i correct? this equates roughly to 24'6" x 11'6" will this if my calculations are correct cause us to pay extra and should we always go for the larger pitch?
Your maths is accurate, rhinoatcas. (Great name!!!)
As for "larger pitch" it all depends on the campsite you go to. Some have marked out pitches and state the maximum size of tent allowed on that pitch. Some have different fees for different size tents. Some charge per person regardles the size of tent.
I generally go to campsites that do not have marked pitches and so tent size is not usually an issue.
Basically, check with the campsite you are thinking of going to.
