My God! I was told that camping people were friendly and easy going - don't know if I dare take my little TV in our tent now!!
Friendly, easy going - mostly, but also a LOT of people go camping because they want to get away from 'modern' life... so things like TVs are annoying.
We went to a camping shop today and it was really apparent that camping is becoming a 'how can I get a cheap holiday with all the conveniences I have at home' rather than 'how can I get close to nature and live more simply'
Time campsites started to differentiate me thinks.
Although I don't take a TV, I have no objection to other people taking them as long as they keep the sound level low, and don't subject me to the latest carryings on in Eastenders. Most you need do is stand a couple of feet away from your tent to test the sound level.
People take TVs for all sorts of reasons. Yes it is nice to play cards/games as a family - but that is not everybody's idea of fun. I love to read, and when I am holiday I get more chance than I do at home - but not only does everyone like reading, but not all people can read. Used to know somebody, very intellegent, well read, until they had a mild stroke - unable to read other than very basic stuff.
I always take a portable DVD player which doesn't come out very often, but on the odd time it has, it has been a life saver. Usually comes out when the weather is bad, and we are totally fed up of everything else. When the kids were younger, I used it a couple of times as a babysitter, so that I could get jobs like packing done.
just been away and with the rain everything was switched off and the four of us just sat looking up at the roof of the tent listening to the rain in the dark.
I have a small portable DVD player I will be taking as my autistic son responds well to DVDs and I'm sure if it was a choice of him screaming due to over stimulation or watching a DVD everyone would chose DVD, but I agree with the sound thing, last year we could not sleep due to the sound from a TV several hundred yards away
This gets really boring how many times is this tv thing going to rear its ugly head. OP asked about which is a good tv to take not whether she should take one or not. In a modern world where some folk have a tv in every room at home its hardly surprising to find them in a tent on a campsite with ehus is it. Yes you might not like it but unless they are banned by the site then its just the way it is - its a big assumption that people who take a tv don't talk to each other nor enjoy the outdoors, play with their kids or watch the thing all evening every evening. Sometimes I take a tv for our young children to watch a few dvds 1st thing or last thing at night & sometimes we don't thats what is so nice about personal choice.
Without going completely off topic, threads like this don't put me off forums. If you put a diverse group of people in a room together, they aren't going to agree on everything and to my mind, forums are no different.
Personally, I don't want to take a TV camping but if the OP does, surely that's their choice? I know some people don't like dogs and I'm taking my dogs camping, but I'll be respectful of other people and not let my dogs cause any problems.
Surely it's all about enjoying your holiday while being courteous to others?
The problem with this idea of "personal choice" is that it impacts on someone elses' 'personal choice' ie their choice not to take a telly. Does it really seem that fair that those people who choose not to take a t.v must be subjected to listening to one in the tent next door? I just think its very unfair and typical of the 'I'm alright jack society' we seemt to live in these days.
Of course, some people are mindful of the volume ( as I said we take a lap-top and occasionally use it...but I'm so paranoid about the sound that we end up practically lip reading ! )..but there's always those who will just take advantage. As I say we've been on the receiving end and it spoiled things enough for me to burst into tears !!. I'd hate to think I'd upset someone that much while they were trying to enjoy their holiday.
The answer I suppose is to ban t.vs from tents...though interestingly its not a rule I've ever come accross before. Has anyone else?
