We're planning a trip to Shell Island next week. I prefer to camp somewhere secluded and away from it all so am hoping to find a quiet spot amongst the dunes.
BUT we have never pitched a tent in sand. Are there some special pegs we should be using?
Does anyone have any useful tips?
Thanks

Shell prefer you not to camp on the dunes themselves but on the grass along side the dunes which is secluded and a firm enough base to peg. In 300 acres you will find a spot just right for you.

...if you do end up on sand, though, you need to get yourself some sand stakes, like these (Sorry about the slow flash site...)

delta pegs are best but the long plastic ones, wooden ones or v shaped metal pegs are better, don't rely on the thin round ones, if the wind gets up and your on sandy soil you'll be running round putting pegs back in every 5 minutes...

I was gonna suggest the long plastic ones....got some from my local £ shop last year...think there's 10 in a pack and at nearly 12" long they go in quite deep.

There are secluded areas under trees as well at shell island.
We pitched with friends beside the North Chalet and took our inflatable kayak. We had a ball!!

Another option that works well in sand is to tie the guy around the middle of the peg (preferably passed through a hole in a V peg), and to bury it horizontally. And a method I have used for guying 30ft radio masts is to fill a bag with sand or pebbles, tie the guy line around the bag, and then bury that - doesn't budge.
