Hi
Some tents are out and in the shops but most shops will not start to display them until mid March due to the weather etc.
Vango have shipped early and I think you will find some Outwells also starting to come through. What you may still find hard to get will be footprints, carpets and extensions as the tents come through first.
One of the reasons most retailers do not stock the tents until March is they have to pay the suppliers 30 days after the stock arrives, so if you take the stock in on the 1st of Jan the retailer will have to pay for that stock on the 1st of Feb and the retailer will not of sold very much by then to be able to pay the supplier. In some retail cases this isnt so much of a problem and the retailers who take stock in early tend to have good finances, thats not to say this is correct in all cases etc...

Maybe the independant retailers pay their suppliers on thirty days, but not the large retailers, try sixty to ninty days.....I know from experience!

Hi Gary, I'm surprised by that, I used to be an area manager for a very large international company and the division I worked in did seasonal products where the main retailing period was spring/summer. My job was to call on franchised outlets like yourself (privately owned - single/multi site) plus some national outlets.
We used to operate a winter stocking service, whereby you negotiate your order for next season anytime between late August and early December and take delivery before Xmas (split deliveries okay). You then by pay a 25% split, late March,Apr,May June.
As the manufacturer, we got our orders in early on the factory and the retailers got extended credit. It meant the retailers could bank a few end of season sales, reclaim the VAT early and there could be dual (wholesale) prices for last season/news season goods. If the retailer gave a decent sized order then a bit of advertising sort could be given (I'm sure you know how what advertising supports really means) and some clothing freebies for staff/good customers.
Hi Road Hog and the-saint
You are both correct and I would not like to say what i have explained above is a hard and fast rule but... and its a big but... Times have changed and its harder for suppliers to get insurance against bad debt etc, so suppliers are looking at retail credit levels etc etc etc. Yes all good retailers will sort out their own deals with the suppliers and that may include extended credit terms and some companies do not need extended credit etc but as a basic rule what I stated above still stands. you will find a number of retailers who have started to take stock in but again its normally about the end of Feb, begining of March when this happens for lets just say, a number of reasons....
