i went to go outdoors at the weekend and nearly fainted. Apart from the propane for the northstar lantern only been 12 quid for 2 (i consider that a good price) standard c106 cartridges are 1.80 each and the aerosol gas cartridges for single gas burners and heaters are 4 for 6 quid!
with a little luck though found a guy on ebay selling 16 aerosol gas cartridges for £20 quid and another bloke was selling 25 (yes 25) cadac c106 cartridge equivalents and have talked him into accepting £25 for the lot!
while i have managed to get some bargains i am still shocked at gas costs at a time of year when gas is most useful!

Its like buying summat battery powered from Argos & buying batteries for it, you pay thru the nose for the batteries. With a little forward planning you buy the batteries bogof while shopping in Tescos.
As you have discovered, don't buy the cartriges where you buy the stove.
It's the age-old story of "supply and demand" I would have thought.
When everyone wants something the price rises so the manafacturer/retailer can make as much profit as possible.
Accordingly, when demand is low the price drops.
Basic economic principle.
I believe British Gas are currently trumpeting how they will be dropping prices soon as it realises it's customers are "struggling in the recession"........no- it's because spring and summer are rapidly approaching and demand is going to drop significantly.

Go Outdoors usually do 3 x 4 pack of the 'hairspray' ones for £12. We bought some 2 years ago and haven't even used half of them yet (use the barbie more anyway!!)

Are they safe? We got quite a few given to us with our tent and we have them stored in the loft above our kitchen.
They should be safe, there's not much chance of them being stolen from up there.

iwe bought a load last year, but £6 for four at the moment! they were also selling c106 for £1 at one point, will end up getting a load of gas in august this year to avoid this again.
What amazes me is that the gas is cheap enough in aug/sep for the winter/autumn camping season so why not now for for te sroing camping. I do not see the logic.
The aerosol cartridges I have got are by sunngas and you do have to be careful 70g-80g difference can be as much as an hour extra gas for a gas heater! also cheap cartridges tend to be a bit wetter so gas does not get as hot.

we use camping gaz, little blue bottle thingy, and if i buy it here in liverpool, a replacement costs about £12....but last year we ran out and a replacement in Bangor cost £27.00 for exactly the same thing,

When we were in Wales last year they had the calor refil prices displayed in the information cabin on the site. These were the prices that Calor themselves say the suppiers should charge - and it deff wasn't £27!! Someone's cashing in there.
John - prices are going to be more at this time of year because people want to buy the gas for going camping or for getting their kit together ready.
In Sept most people have stopped for the year hence the lower prices.
How hard is it to work out? Man goes into large camping shop to buy gas stove, they sell them £2 cheaper than anywhere else, this he knows because he has researched on t'internet for hours.
"Would you like gas cannisters with that sir?" says the assistant. "Oh yes pleeease" says man completely missing that with his cheap stove he is paying for 4xprice for his cannisters than he could have paid elsewhere. This allows the shop to discount the stove.
What he had failed to do was spend hours on t'internent searching for the cheapest gas cannisters.
An even bigger rip-off is Coleman Fuel which, if they sold it in 5 litre containers, would cost around 60 pounds. An alternative to this robbery is either panel wipe or Aspen 4T which costs around 14 quid for 5 litres. It's essentially the same stuff as Coleman fuel which is a highly refined almost pure form of petrol. Cheaper still would be to run the stoves on unleaded petrol which due to all the additives is a dirty fuel which tends to clog up the works and doesn't burn as hot.
I went for a 15 kg butane calor refil the other week and it had gone up by £2 form 1 month earlier . I asked why this was and the counter staff said tht calor had been bought by a european company and had added a surcharge that may be temporary but couldnt say either way for now .
Its rather tempting to switch to propane and try to use lpg gas pumps with an adaptor and fill the bottle yourself as tis sometihng like 55p a kg isnt it . Ive heard this is practiced in europe.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
