One thing to think about from my experiance.
I used to use a blue tarp under my old tent to keep the underside clean etc.
What I had'nt thought of was when I arrived at site in rain last August, and it did'nt look like it was going to stop any time soon, so I laid out the tarp (which quite quickly gained puddles), then put up the tent.
On packing up, the blue tarp and bottom of the tent were still soaked, even though it had not rained again through our stay and it was starting to smell.
So yes, footprints are useful but not if you have to set-up in the rain.
