A bucket (with a lid preferably ) will serve the same purpose and just empty it in the chemical disposal point or loos in the morning .
I do recomend the portaloos, I have always had one myself, but it came with our first caravan , so didn't lay out cash for it to start with.
but at this stage , start off with a bucket ,as most people do.
as youre a novice I will add, never empty waste water or wee buckets in the hedge , there will be a designated place to empty waste water , and its not under the drinking water taps in the field.
most sites have washing up sinks with hot water for you to do the dishes .
We had no loo for the first 4 years as i wouldn't allow one in the tent lol. I finally gave in 2 years ago as it was easier for our little girl when she woke up needing the loo. I was still adamant i didn't like it being in the tent so didn't use it for the first couple of trips out ( just to prove a point as you do )but we have acquired two new dogs since then who wouldn't take too kindly to me slipping out to use the campsite toilet very early in the morning and not taking them with me lol! Its now become an essential part of our kit.
We (family, 2 kids, been camping since they were both in nappies) have never felt the need for a toilet, not even bucket really. But some friends who camp do.
So I'd suggest holding fire on it for now. Do a bit of camping and then you are in a position to decide whether or not it is something you feel the need for.
This is generally my approach with camping 'stuff' once you get past the essentials anyway.
I have one because I have dogs and camp on my own mostly, so slipping out during the night would be a major operation and probably disturb my neighbours, so it is easier to use it. Mine is a fancy bucket with a lid really, but a bit more stable than a bucket.
Having said that, I think it will depend on what space you have in the car too. No point buying one if it doesnt fit in!!!
Get a Kampa khazi (£19). Shouldn't take up any extra room in the car as you can stuff it full with socks , undies, T- shirts etc. Proper loo that can be sat on!

Oh no !!! Please tell me you don't really ?
why not? its got a bucket inside that comes out for emptying , I'm sure it gets a good clean out with disinfectant before the socks go in
We have the Highlander folding toilet with an added (jazzed up) flexible chopping board attached by a tie to the frame. The chopping board moulds to the contoured shape of the seat. Sounds a bit heath robinson, but actually looks good and is very sturdy and practical. Add a bag for night-time wee and then just empty down toilet or elsan point and throw bag in the morning. Anti-bac the seat and then add a bin bag for the day. Doesn't smell and the lid keeps away wasps when its used as a bin.
Folds very compact and is very affordable. Does both jobs well. We added car decals/ transfers - orange splats - to the lid to jazz it up and make it fun. The securing ring arrangement holds the bags nice and tight and even when quite full the bags hold tight. You can get various makes of suitable bags from ebay quite affordably, some are even biodegradable.
As you can see, it is usually recommended, especially if you have children to get either a simple bucket with lid or something a bit posher (with a seat) such as the Kampa kazi or a luggable loo.
As beefysmum has said its just not camping etiquette to either pee behind the tent or empty the bucket there. There will be either a 'chemical disposal point' or it will be called an 'elsan' (yep I don't know what that word means either, but its basically a manhole cover with a hosepipe next to it for rinsing out.
Then use a few drops of Zoflora or some other disinfectant to rinse out or the other option is to line the bucket with a pedal bin liner and add a layer of the woodstyle cat litter, I have done a link with what I think is the sort used (apologies if its the wrong type) as we just use zoflora.
Other things to consider are taking cheapy loo paper which disintegrates easily cos if you do have to empty in an elsan, theres nothing worse than it getting blocked. Urggghh!!! believe me I've seen one, especially when caravans have emptied their allrounder toilets in it!!!

True ! And it could be worse, might keep tatties in it
Wouldn't be without my portable loo - I have a Fiamma Bi-Pot and Holi came with a brand new Thetfotd Porta Potti!! It's saved me having to trek across a field in the pouring rain in the middle of the night with a half asleep child who has to have a wee NOW!!
