OH and I normally go camping in july or august, but the only two weeks we could get off together this year were the first two weeks of June.
we both work in retail so we don't get to do weekends, instead we look forward to our yearly trip.
i'm posting this because i'm worried about under-estimating how cold it could be. we're going to be staying in dorset, about 10mins drive from the New Forest. we stayed there twice last year and were fine, much warmer then when we were in exe valley in exmoor the year before. and we don't do EHU.
we've got the bedding pretty much sorted after some well informed purchases last year (cheers ukcampsite users ) although i may upgrade my Nitestar 350 for a 450.
the thing that worries me the most is taking the right clothes. i usually take layers (vests, t-shirts, longsleeve tops, hoodies, fleeces etc) but am worried my usual "kit" will be too thin.
what does everyone else take or recommend for an early june trip?
We are due to go away for a few nights first week in June. Not looking good on Metcheck though, so may go the week before, kids are off then as well and itssuppose to be nice. Night time temps wont drop too low and long daylight hours in june. As to your question, usual kit would be fine.
We always go in June and for the last three years the weather has been warmer and nicer than it has been in August. Thats the thing with camping in this country, there is no guarantee of good weather whenever you go! Last year OH ended up getting sun stroke after a day on Perranporth beach, we didn't have a spot of rain all week!
What ever the weather, a long as you have plenty of layers and fleece blankets just in case, it sounds as if you have your sleeping kit sussed, I'm sure you will be fine!
Just enjoy it!
We were at Wooda first week in June last year and it was 26 degs all week, we met a couple who said the same week the year before was just as hot. It tended to turn cool at around 8.30pm and I think we had the heater on once or twice. We still used same insulation for bedding, same sleeping bag & an optional throw - just didn't bother with the fleece liners. The kids still wore their fleecy all in one pjs but in the day it was shorts & t shirts. Obviously we didn't have this long hard winter then but Im hopeful that things will begin to brighten up by the end of next week - I hope so otherwise that outdoor pool might go untouched!!!
I think that this years National Camping Week is the first week of June (plus it's 1/2 term holidays for a lot of people) so I'm guessing there will be plenty of others camping then too...
We're going to try out the new C&CC site at Gullivers in Milton Keynes.
Your list of usual layers sounds ok to me as long as you have a top waterproof layer too.
------------- Growing old is obligatory, growing up is optional.
We were away the first weekend in June last year, and it was the best weather we've ever had for camping! Nice and sunny and hot in the day, and not too chilly at night. At least at that time of year, the night is short, so things can't get too cold, no matter what the weather.
Layers are the best plan. You probably won't need winter woollies, but I took a couple of Peter Storm V-neck tops and a sweater, tee-shirts and jeans. No need for long underwear that time of year!
We're planning a family camp, and an assault on Snowdon, the first weekend of June this year, and don't plan on taking anything heavier than sweaters and light kagoules.

I always find if I keep my feet warm I am warm.
So take your normal stuff and some thick socks
Â
i find that too, especially in bed / sleeping bag.
got it sorted though, bought some thermal socks from the 99p store last year and they work a treat!
i also try to make sure i'm wrapped up at points where veins lie closest to the skin - feet, ankles, wrists and neck. it does help as i do tend to feel the cold quite easily.
Went away 1st 2 weeks of June last year and also had amazing weather. We're away for 1st 2 weeks of June this year too and will pack for every eventuality as I did last year. Layers are best and I always take my beani hat as find if I keep my head warm, then I'm warm. Fab choice of campsite by the way, stayed there many a time, its great there! Have a fab time :-)
------------- April 10 - Kelvedon Hatch
May 10 - Bulphan,Kelvedon Hatch, Boro Waters
June 10 - Barmouth, North Fambridge
No other trips booked YET but that will change :-)
We are going away first week in June, Spring Bank. Going to Cornwall. I have bought daughter shorts and three quarters in material that should dry quickly. I am hoping they only get wet by the sea!!! Wasn't planning on taking jeans in case they get too wet.
Really interested what everyone else is taking as our first ever week camping.
Its allways a challenge with the weather in the UK and that is something we have no control over and can do nothing about it. At least these days there is so much great kit around to cope with it not like back in the olden days beofre gortex and inner tents.
I will say one year I was so fed up of not having nice summer weather I travelled 1400 miles to Souston in South West France and satyed at Camping L' Arial (BTW is a great site and lovely part of France) and it rained nearly constant for a week when usually when I go its hot and sunny.
One tip for camping in the UK is always have a good pair of shoes or wellies with you there is nothing worse then cold wet muddy feet
Some of the best weather in the last few years has been in June, so your list sounds fine to me. If you are worried, bung in a wooly hat and an extra fleece for late night socialising. A spare fleece blanket can be handy for bunging on or under the sleeping bag if you get chilly. We cycle camp in January and I feel the cold, so it's perfectly doable without going overboard on stuff :)
------------- There will be good days and bad days and THIS is one of them.
we are going May 29th to June 6th as I work in a school and have to go in half term, we are hoping for nice weather, last summer in cornwall was awful so we feel quite prepared, shouldnt think you would need to worry too much, we are going to chance it with our ususal kit and some extra warm bags for the boys x
UK Outlook for Monday 24 May 2010 to Monday 7 Jun 2010:
With a continuation of high pressure to the southwest of the UK. A northwesterly weather type is expected to bring some spells of unsettled weather with temperatures starting normal for the time of year but becoming relatively cold again as we move into June. There are indications of above average rainfall amounts during the period, firstly over parts of northern UK but later southwestern and central parts appear to be the wettest. Otherwise rainfall amounts will be near normal
