We also take big pan of curry for the 1st night. A packet of poppadoms and heat up a naan bread in a dry frying pan. Long life milk, tins of meat for camping teas all helps to the cost down.
Half frozen bottle of milk, take a little out, add some milk shake syrup or powder and shake like crazy. (Put top on again, yeeessss...) and have instant milk shake slushes. We do this at home too.
As to pancakes I bought some of these bottles of instant pancake mix that you just add milk to...they were 10p a bottle in my local Tesco after Pancake Day. Bit of a cheat but they make a good pud.
I do fancy pancakes - a non stick frying pan has been on my list for the last few years and just never got round to it.. Its bad enough cooking bacon in my 'stick' frying pan and then trying to clean it! Might go get one this weekend then I too can have lovely pancakes!!! .. might try the milkshake slush too - the kids would love that!
I don't find the freezing process alters the taste of anything we take camping. Obviously fresh veg alters in texture, so if you are going to take frozen veg, make sure you blanch it or sautee it lightly before freezing. There's no reason why your onions, garlic, peppers etc couldn't be sauteed first, frozen, and then tipped into your pan to start your stew etc on site :)
The condensation caused inside the cold box/bag can be an issue for some items, for instance, I wouldn't keep bread or cakes in there. (but then, I wouldn't at home either)
Don't be too afraid of the lack of refridgeration. We lived for centuries without it. Most fruit and veg can take a few days of not being in the fridge.
For real healthy ones Use 1/3 each of fine oatmeal, buckwheat and plain white flour, eggs, milk. Then with lemon and honey will keep you going till supper also just as good with cheese ham tuna etc.
The BEST non stick pans are black iron pans, Check out Alliance online catering company for all sizes Range from £5 upwards I bought four and a wok. They are briiant for cooking over open fire or gas and you can throw under grill or in oven as iron, and not too heavy. They need a little seasoning to get going but last a lifetime and no nasty telflon. Had my last pan for over 10 years and still going strong.
I lose weight on holidays too but I don't think it's related to my food intake but more the extra activity and all that fresh air.
I lose weight on holiday too. I think it's because we don't take the bisuit tin or chocolate bars.
Our eating habits are totally different while we're away. I cook a full English at around 9, and then we don't usually eat till the evening. If we have anything during the day, it'll only be a small snack, unless I get a cream tea craving.
*Cough*, I have been known to have Tesco deliver to a campsite. You need to make sure you get a slot when you will be there and all set-up but hey ho beats shopping in person.
I've never bothered, because we generally eat out, but I think it's a great idea. When we were at Three Cliffs Bay, we saw a Tesco van drive on site and head for a camper van. We think he'd delivered there before, as he knew exactly where to go and there were 3 rows of them!

It saves space in the car, time and fuel to do the actual shopping and one's blood pressure is less likely to rise

hi.... We have to have a bit of homebaking as well....generally because we like a bit of cake and coffee in the afternoon (German husband... coffee and cake ritual especially on holiday) So last year I did fruit cake, flap jacks and parkin ( cakes that camp well).....but this year have done the fruit cake already. Next on the list is an apple muffin cake and of course flapjacks....I am hoping to freeeze the 2 cakes...
Great idea about the spag bol will definatly do that as well!!!!
Other than that the kids love pasta and rice which we do on the cadac..the pasta I do first which keeps warm in the saucepan and then I do some sort of sauce with help from a tin....
We also do bacon and eggs in the morning and barbeques...I am taking a mexican kit this year as well so will try that on the Cadac too
It is fun cooking while camping and saves soooooo much money it is untrue!!!!
It's well worth investing in a food flask. I stick uncooked rice and boiling water in one before we leave the house and by the time we get there and set up the rice is cooked nicely with minimum effort.....pre cooked chilli in another one and you've got a meal. I then continue to use the food flask through the week to save the effort of cooking at the end of a long day or I pick stuff up through the day and barbecue it in the evening.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
