hi all new to camping haven't been away yet   just wondering what all you experienced campers do when you go out on day trips and leave your tent unattended, or am I just worrying over nothing.  Any advice of how to keep your gear safe would be greatly received.

Lock anything valuable in the boot of your car or take it with you. Normal camping gear just stays behind out of sight in the tent.

I have never had anything go missing in all the years I have been camping ( except for some sausages pinched by a dog once lol)

I guess you can never be too careful, and should always take sensible precautions. (Leave nothing on show when you are away for the day), but I have always been of the opinion that there is an unwritten rule that you keep an eye on your neighbouring pitches.

We certainly do, and would hope that when we are out for the day, someone is keeping an eye on our stuff (from a protective point of view!)

We have never had anything taken in all our years of camping, valuables out of site, or in the car, having said that our entire kitchen is always outside 'on display' and nothings ever been touched.

Whilst I think it would be foolish to take the approach that "oh, it's camping, these are all nice people" I think to a large extent those that say people tend to look out for one another are probably right. I know when we were at one of our regular sites in Norfolk recently and a vaguely pikey-looking van drove through the site (sorry, for those not in areas where you're familiar with the term Pikey, read "Dids" or "Gippo's" ;-) ) heads were popping up from behind windbreaks like a load of meerkats until the van pulled away! Wallets, Keys and phones should NEVER be left unattended in tents, and in fact my purse and housekeys are locked in the car overnight so I can't wander off to the showers and forget about them! General camping gear, well, common sense says you leave tent curtains across so it's not an abvious advert, but other than that I think you do have to retain some trust in the world!

-------------
If you go camping to "get away from it all" - why take it all with you?
