ok guys and gals.  or should i say winter campers.as that is who i need help from. i will be doing some winter camping this year. i have a 3 man quechua pop up. but i dont think it will be suitable for winter. or snowy conditions. are the poly cotton better in winter for being warmer. i will be camping alone.  ( i presume). i dont need one i can stand up in. as it will be on the west coast of scotland. and high tents always get damaged. so bending height will do. and up to 3 man space. i want space to put my junk i will be taking. so your help on the best tent. cheap as possible but good. is needed.  thanks all.

SuperPup,

For winter camping, the tent fabric is pretty irrelevant.  You're going to fekin freeze, whatever your tent is made from.  All that matters is your sleeping bag and/or your tent heater (ideally...a woman.  I know, I know...I don't have one either...).  We're probably best to concentrate on a serious sleeping bag... ;-)  You can get some heavy duty arctic bags for under £30.  Spend less than that and at 4am one February morning you would sell your grandmother for another tog or two.

I reckon you also need a better tent than a pop-up, for winter.  It's not about temperature (I refer you to my "you're going to fekin freeze anyway" comment); it's about water and wind resistance.  I have a 3-man Robens Fortress, which is fine anywhere in the world; it's designed for the Himalayas!  It takes a couple of minutes to erect and because it's small, it warms quickly through body heat and a single burner stove.  Any of the decent brands will do the job though.  It doesn't matter what you get, once you're kipping, they're freezing.  You need a great kip sack.

Alternatively...a Bell Tent and a wood burning stove is always my Plan A!!!

Hope that helps.

PS - ex-Army Arctic kip sacks are cheap as chips...always loads on eBay or in surplus stores.

This is the Robens Fortress.  I've had it years and love it...and it's fine in any environment whatsoever.  I think Robens still sell them.  I'm sure that there are equally good tents from Vango or one of the other serious players.

thanks dave. useful info there about the tent. i know about the sleeping bags. i got a tesco cheapie here. but i am going to get a good one. and surplus stores is where i will start. used to be a good one here in gateshead high street. closed now. boy did i buy some stuff from there the last 40 years. all good too. i will have a proper check of the tents you advise on. i got a dounble air bed. but even they can be freezing. i dont have a heater. just a one burner stove. but as you say. small tent. stove for two mins and all the heat ya need. i got the 3 man size as i wanted the space. plus a lady friend will come with me. but not in winter sadly. we all need a larger than stated size tent. got to put ya junk somewhere. i rtemember when we were kids camping. if it was raining. all ya heard was. dont touch the sides.  ha. someone always did and in came the rain. but boy did we have a good time. ok dave. cheers
