Not being a parent, am I right to get the impression that TVs/DVDs are used to pacify children?

Have never thought about needing a TV when camping.  Wouldn't you have to be VERY bored to want to watch TV rather than a fire, sunset, animals &c.?

There's clearly something I'm not getting here and would be obliged if someone could explain what it's all about.

lol well as a parent of  5 young children i would answer 'yes' we do use it to pacify the kids...which i must admit isnt always the case but sometimes i panic about how much noise my tribe makes at night and if i put a dvd on then they curl up and are all fast asleep by the time its finished...which relaxes me alot more knowing that we are not disturbing others...me and hubby dont use it ourselves..we enjoy the peace and quiet..and hopefully in a fair few years our kids will enjoy the same...:0)
