We've just come back from a brilliant few days at Pillaton, and those of you who've been will know how hard the ground is (must remember rock pegs next time!)!
Well when packing up this morning I found a brilliant use for the dogs lead! I simply hooked the clip underneath the head of the tent peg and pulled the pegs out from a standing position, very quick and very easy!
I suppose it has the potential to weaken the lead, so buying one specifically for the job might be a good idea!
a quick and easy long handled peg puller can be made by taking an off cut of copper or chrome piping about 6ins long and about 1/2ins diameter (the sort of stuff used for household waterpipes and showers), sand any sharp edges off, and thread a 18ins loop of strong nylon cord, similar to the stuff guyropes are made out of. through the pipe to form a loop, then knot both ends together securely.
To pull pegs out, just hook the loop of cord under the peg, and use the pipe as a flat handle to pull the peg out. due to the longer cord you can get much more leaverage and pegs come out much easier, we have a few of these with various cord lengths for differing ground situations, short ones for soft ground, and longer ones for the tough stuff!

I got fed up of pulling the handles off those store bought peg pullers so made my own a couple of years ago, no bending anymore and it pulls anything out
Slip another tent peg (thin wire type) under peg to be lifted a steady pull and you should have no problem........

That's what I usually do! It works but often results in a bent peg and dirty hands, plus you have to be on your knees!
Pillaton has the hardest ground I've ever come across, and I knew I was going to have problems, but the dog lead idea came to me, and it turned out to be the quickest I've ever got 'em out!
I like the dog lead idea! I lost a few pegs at Lower Lacon in Shropshire, as once I'd managed to get them in there was no getting them out! I wish I'd thought of the dog lead!
I've got one of those tent pullers with the plastic handles although I can't see it lasting. But when I was looking around in the shed a couple of years ago I came across the tool that came with my daughters trampoline. Its the same as any regular tent peg puller accept far more substantial so that went straight into the peg bag. I have used a claw hammer on rock pegs with no real problems & I've also pulled out pegs by using another peg too.
