Hi all!
We are going camping in Wales this August bank hol wknd for 4 nights (please don't rain!), myself, my husband and our 2 kids aged 4 and 2. I've only been camping once (for my hen do!) and the weather was beautiful for the 3 days but the nights were so cold that 3 of my friends ended up in their cars for the nights! I was determined to not let the cold beat me and I stuck it out, dithering all night but I'm glad I braved the cold in the end :o)
So now we are going camping with the little ones and I'm worried that we won't be able to keep them warm at night. How do we make sure they don't freeze? We have no electric heaters etc. Is it just good old water bottles, hats, warm pj's layered up and loads of blankets? When I went camping I had a pair of pj's, a hoodie, 2 pairs of thick socks, a hat, a sleeping bag (a good quality Blacks one) and a medium duvet over me and I was still shivering! Plus I'd had a lot to drink with it being my hen do lol I thought this would help me sleep better, unfortunately it didn't!
what a great post...thanks for posting this OP...ive picked up some great tips and idea's reading from the comments. As its our first family camping trip in august..and as we call this summer hols...its soooo cold in the nights now..and early mornings.
Anything above, around, 10 degrees+ at night my 2 seem to be Ok with long PJ's, self inflating mat, 3 season bag. During summer I often put a micro fleece hoody, or thin jumper, on my youngest (5) as he's forever wriggling out of his bag.
I was sleeping in a small tent with him last week and he migrated around the place. At one point he was using my legs as a pillow. Anyway something like a thin fleece top makes it not such a problem. I can drag him most of the way back into this bag now and again. I often have a spare fleece blanket to hand also, as he migrates I can throw it over the exposed bits. He's not quite so bad when it's properly cold.
Alongside the other suggestions on this thread. When it is really cold I have a little fleece pram sized blanket to hand for my youngest. My eldest is fine, he can wriggle down in the bag, pull the hood over, put his jumper hood up. But the youngest can't manage himself in quite the same way. If I feel he's too cold I block the gaps into his sleeping bag with it. Sometimes put one around his head area, not tight of course. Just enough to help him keep the air he's warmed up in and the cold air out.
We have a late night drink - hot choc normally, with a couple of biscuits - then (clean teeth!) and off to bed. Really found going to bed with a tummy full of warm drink and carbs aided warmth and sleep :)

thanks so much to everyone who replied, that's very kind of you to take the time to tell me how you all keep everyone warm! I went to Decathlon in Stockport and bought some foam mats with the silver underneath and a large fleece blanket. I now just need sleeping bags for the kids so I'm gonna search the net for some good ones. I'm just dreading trying to pack everything into the car now haha! x
Thanks again! I really appreciate all your advice! x
The Agros 300gsm mummy bags are what my kids have got and they keep really warm in them. Nice and reasonably priced, packed up really small and wash well too.
I sometimes think that no matter what you do, some people will always be cold (I'm one of them). I've tried an airbed with insulation under and over as well as a camp bed with insulation over, then a sleeping bag and fleece liner, a hot water bottle, me in fleecy jammies, 2 pairs of socks and a hat with several fleece blankets over me and I'm still cold. I managed to get a thermal top and bottoms in the Next sale so going to add those in to the mix and see how I get on. My sleeping bag is my hubbies army winter one so I know it's a decent one. I'm also going to try putting my thermals on earlier in the evening before I get cold and see if this makes any difference.
I have just bought these sleeping bags for my two (age 7 and 3), they seen to be nice and cosy, and it means that you don't need to take additional pillows for them.
