I'm interested in going to a site but it asks that tents use breathable groundsheets. My tent has a SIG, so even if I buy a breathable sheet for a footprint, will it actually help? Thanks

Before I got one I'd have said it makes no difference but having seen how the grass looked under the zig with ecomat this year I've changed my mind. It looked a lot healthier than last year and was growing through the weave so I'm guessing it helps some.

Hello Pally.
I looked for an alternative to plastic sheet/tarp/matching footprint for my new tent.

I read a number of sites would only accept Eco-Mats.

So I did some calculations, and bought 2.
I use one under my dome tent, and both under the Outwell.

Not only do they reduce damage to the grass, but keep the SIG clean and protected from being punctured.
They also act as a thermal barrier, and feel really comfortable under bare feet.
Also, unlike solid sheets, they let rain through, rather than 'pooling' under the SIG.
When placed on the ground they're noise free, and stay put in a breeze.

As you will have guessed by now, I'm a satisfied user.

They'll last me a lifetime as well, as they're rot free.

I got mine from here:-

http://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/shop/eco_mat_breathable_groundsheet__368

Worth consideration. I know the initial cost may seem high.

Kind regards James

Then I bought a tent.

Thanks for those, its good to know it would makke a difference. I don't know why footprints aren't made of this stuff in the first place, it would be so much better for the environment surely.

That breathable underlay stuff....it's just like weed control membrane that can be had for less from garden supply places.

Also there's no point in having breathable footprint, unless your tent also has a breathable groundsheet.

If your tent has an SIG then a breathable groundsheet will be no use what so ever.
The only time that a breathable groundsheet is any good is in such as a frame tent that doesn't come with any kind of floor covering, and even then the sleeping inners can't have a breathable groundsheets for obvious reasons.
I think the campsite is talking nonsense, the only time they will insist on breathable groundsheets is for caravan awnings.

exactly right. Plus the whole point of using a footprint is to a. protect your sig, and b. keep your sig clean and dry. Breathable groundsheets actually allow worm casts to come through, I know as I used to have a caravan awning.

The SIG on top of an Eco-Mat does not prevent the grass underneath from getting air as much as a solid cover.

Of course it does prevent the suns rays with a SIG over it.

I reiterate my personal reasons for using them.
