We have just got home a day early from Crows Nest near Filey.
Woke up at 3am this morning to the sounds of very gusty weather. Didn't get back to sleep worrying about tent and the kids. Finally got up around 7.30 to check the tent, bowing a lot at the front, but holding her own - I took the voyager (so glad i did't take the Sahara, would ahve never made it). Made the kids get up, as starting to panic, wind getting stronger. Packing away non essential gear into the car. Me and friends in next door tent say if it gets any worse we wll get the tents down.
So as i was packing car away, i went to open the hatchback window on the boot of my car, and whosssshhh. Wind took the whole window out of the car all over me and the car. Friends DD said i looked like a snow queen with all the shimmering round me!!!
So that was it, tent had started to go, with 2 strong men holding the 2 front guys, i chucked everything out of the tent, kids chucked it all in the car, and took 6 of us to get the tent packed up, with the rest of us holding the other tent til we could get round to getting theirs down.
So damage was the car window, and where the glass flew, a 1cm hole in the tent. At least both can be repaired, and no one injured.
Loads of tents got damaged/destroyed there today. What beats me, is people knew what the weather was like, but still left there tents and went off the site. They were the ones coming back to the flat tents. - Why did they not stay on site to keep an eye on things???
Still, no harm done to us, and not put us off another trip, just not a site soooo exposed.
I think we will be getting a few more threads like this one. Glad your all ok and it has not put you off. As you say it always beats me why people go out for the day, when its like that, I like to stay round the tent and make sure its alright.

Pleased no one was hurt in the end. I have had my eye on Crows Nest for a while but a friend had warned me that it is windy even on the calmest of days so have put off going.
Blimey, that was scary with the window going too.
I'm glad you are all okay and it hasn't put you off.
A camping story that you will look back and laugh about later .
It was definately the wind, we had used the cars as windbreaks. I had gone to open the back window hatch, it was hadly open and the next thing i knew it was all over the car roof and everywhere. The wind must have whipped it up, breaking the hinges end everything.
hi madmum! We're at scarborough in our voyager. Too late to pack up and couldn't have done it just the two of us with two small kids so we're hanging on for dear life! Lol! Pleased your all ok!
We were at crows nest too! And stupid enough we went out for the day to Scarborough. To tell you truth I wasnt to worried in morning of the 29th when we set off at 9am. Worried in Scarbrough about 5ish when wind was so srong we couldnt walk!!! Omg got back to Crows nest to find war zone. Tents all over (one large tent in playground). Are tent was still pegged down but not standing!! Managed to get eveything out apart from blow up beds!! left beds and tent!!! What time did eveyone start packing up???
Hi we were on the overflow field on the way into the park, about half way down the field. I started getting worried around 7am, parked car in front of tent and treid to ride it out. But by about 12 we decided to pack up. So by about half past we had 2 tents and all the gear packed away. Loads of the smaller tents had gone. We would have gone to help catch some of them, but we were trying to get our gear away safely. The only ones that looked sort of ok, were the ones pitched by the fence along the road into the site, as they were sheltered.
We're at Jasmine Park and have been since last Friday, we were told by the wardens that at their sister site, Crows Nest, all but one tent had packed up and gone home. 18 went home from our site, we were lucky as we're in a corner surrounded by quite high trees which gave us protection, although quite a few small branches fell off the trees. On our way up here last week we commented on seeing tents on Cayton Bay for the first time and said how open it was, while not quite on the cliff top there is only a road and a field between the sea and the site, on Sunday I drove home to pick my daughter up and the tents were taking a real battering, quite a few had collapsed, on the way back about 2 hours later there were only about 3 left, one of which was just a mangled wreck, what a shame, all that money to have it wrecked. Must admit I wouldn't fancy camping on a cliff top for that very reason.
We were staying at the Robin hood (also a sister site) in slingsby about half an hour outside of scarborough. The wind on sunday was also very very strong, it wasn't to bad when we went out for the day (at 9). I was dreading getting back to camp, it was our first ever camping trip and our lovely kampa croyde stood us proud! have to say i was very scared throughout the night and we packed up and left as soon as we could.
That east coast certainly batters a lot of tents, we used to go to Reighton gap, now Reighton sands, when we were kids, we had a cabanon frame tent, and took a battering on a few nights, even though we still have canvas frame tents we still don't have the guts to make long term plans for that area, glaa you got out unscathed
I'm glad we came through it cos the rest of the week has been gorgeous, I'm sat now enjoying my last day before we pack up and go home tomorrow
Drove past Cayton Bay again yesterday and there were absolutely no tents on the field at all, I'm wondering if they've decided not to accept any, or if it was just a quiet weekend. It's not a place I would choose to try if I'm honest, but that said I don't think I'd do any clifftop site either.
