I'd just like to put out a BIG Thank You to everyone at Centenary Way Camping & Caravan Park (Filey) that mucked in and helped anyone and everyone that needed it yesterday (Sunday 29 Aug 2010).

It was manic, anyone that was camping on or near the East coast will know what I mean!

Thanks particularly to the kind motorhomers & caravaners that spent much of their day running around pegging out, resecurring, reattaching and rezipping whilst the tent owners (us included) were out for the day oblivious to the devastation that was unfolding on-site!

I don't know who they were or even if they will ever see this message of appreciation but THANKS anyway.

My Vango Icarus 500 stood up to the challenge well (boy those poles are flexible -thankfully, at times flattened to about 3 feet from the ground before springing back up).

Anyway at 6pm we took the decision to follow others (tenters) lead & headed home, intact. I hope those that sat it out made it through the night unharmed.

BIG THANKS again guys!

Oh good grief Orinoco, it was ridiculously windy yesterday in Filey, really felt for all the campers out there, especially as friends were camping locally at Pickering (Upper Carr)and text this morning to say a tree branch had fallen and ripped the back door of their Ohio L tent.

Took the dog for a walk up Country park (Filey Brigg)this afternoon and there were a lot of fresh yellow patches on the tent field, all the tents were gone understandably, don't think any would have survived up on the cliff top yesterday.

Re: Centenary Way, have just posted some pics on the campsites thread of sunnier days three weeks ago.

Best wishes Sam

We were at Centenary Way in the middle of June when there were strong winds. We went into Scarborough on the Saturday not realising actually how windy it had become. When we returned to our tent, we were truely grateful to our neighbour ( in a motorhome) who had been busy going round most of the tents securing them, (ours included). We ended up packing up and coming home early, which was such a shame. Ever since we bought our tent, 3 years ago, something seems to have happened to our British weather, or has it just been brought to my attention now we have a tent?!!!

We walked through Filey country park yesterday at around 1pm, it was the sight of all the tents doing their level best to become massive kites that alerted us to reality of what was going on and what maybe awaiting us at our own site. The reality of the situation lead us to head on back to our site to check on our tents (our friends an outwell and ours a Vango Icarus 500). We found both were surviving remarkably well, where many others were in a sorry state of collapse. There were not many owners around, quite understanably out for the day. We doubled up the pegging on ours and with the help of guy from Holland we resecured a couple of the worst affected tents and rezipped a few entrances. Then, took the kids off to entertain them, tents, tables & chairs flying about didn't impress them in the slightest. We returned at 6pm to find the campsite pretty well deserted of tents. The centre pitches were all gone or packing. The only tents left and looked to be staying were around around the northern edge  (from where the wind blew) protected by the large hedgerow. Our friends tent the outwell (with rigid tubular frame) really wasn't holding up as well as our Vango (with flexi poles). The outwell really wanted take to the skies and in fact having taken the decision to pack, it did take off just after the last bits were removed from inside. We all turned our backs for the briefest of moments to continue with our individual tasks and off it went, like a scene from Wizard of Oz, spinning through the sky, 12 feet off the ground before crashing in to a tree and hedgerow on the far side of the site. It was at this point that the "Good Samaritans" appeared from the sanctuary and safety of their vans to help. Luckily nobody got hurt and suprisingly enough the tent survived undamaged (no tears and no broken poles....AMAZING).

Well done to anyone who rode the storm and saw the night through under canvas..............................................................you NUTTERS!

We were at crows nest! And stupid enough we went out for the day to Scarborough. To tell you truth I wasnt to worried in morning of the 29th when we set off at 9am. Worried in Scarborough about 5ish when wind was so srong we couldnt walk!!! Omg got back to Crows nest to find war zone. Tents all over (one large tent in playground). Our tent was still pegged down but not standing!! Managed to get eveything out apart from blow up beds!! left beds and tent!!! I think I will stay clear of putting a tent on a cliff next time lol
