Think it depends on the child & on the site. My son has been sleeping in a pup tent since last season. He has just turned 12 years old. We have caravanned for about 4 years now & he used to go with my parents since he was a toddler also he goes on a lot of camps with scouts so he is really used to it.

We use a combination of big sites & CL's & strangley enough I feel safer on a CL site in the middle of nowhere. I quite often go to a CL just the kid's & me with hubby left at home if he is working. I always feel safe. In fact I am probably safer in a field in the middle of nowhere than I would be in my house in built up suburbia!

As someone said before a shout would be heard if there was a problem.

Don't know about what's safe nowadays but in the mid "nineties" my daughters used to go in a frame tent and I slept in a small tent and they were fine.

Guess they would have been fourteen and ten when they went in a tent on their own but I was just a few feet away.

I was garden camping at the age of 9, on my own, Xmas nite in my new tent!

It depends on the maturity of the youngster rather than a hard and fast age.
