This is England!!! Expect the worse and prepare for it, anything else is a bonus!!!
Two years ago we were booked in the lakes early August. The whole week before it rained in torrents. BBC news the week before we left had tents floating around up in Keswick. We were in Pooley Bridge and had 26 degrees, full sun, no wind for five days. Unbeleivable!! Like I said, prepare, You can never take enough fleeces!!

We have our first camp booked this weekend, but the weather forecast is for occassional heavy showers and 14 mph winds. So do I stay or do I go? OH is not enthusiastic about the whole thing anyway, so I don't want the first trip to be a nightmare, but we won't get another chance for over month and I'm desperate to get out there! My 6 year old daughter will be happy to stay in the tent and play but my almost 2 year old son is another matter!

That is exactly what the weather was like when I was camping last week in Scarborough and I had a ball.
I wasn't cold once, met some great people and my trusty little Cabanon Etna kept me cosy, warm and dry.
Go for it.

Hey LewLincs im also from grimsby, ive not long joined this site, we started camping last year and have just bought a Hi Gear Zenobia 6 with porch, we are going to Orchard Park in Tuxford next weekend, we went a couple of times last year and we like it, ever been? I would like to go to france during the summer for a week, any advice on getting there and good sites to stay? its me, wife and 2 girls aged 4+5 would like a site with pool, bar, resturant, evening entertainment and beach close by, and an idea of what we would expect to pay, shame there is no pm function, so sorry to hijack the thread.
But go, we are going next weekend provided its not predicting heavy rain all weekend
It's a small world! We're fairly new to camping - we borrowed a tent and all the gear and FIL's VW camper and went to Devon last August - the weather was truly awful, it rained every day but I still loved the freedon that camping offers, especially with kids so we went out and bought all our own gear. We've been camping once with it over Easter which was awesom, I'm well and truly hooked now!
As for France, my husband used to go every year down to the South of France with his family. We've been twice as a family (August 06 and August 07) down to the same site (La Brasilia in Canet Plage) but we didn't camp, we stayed in a static. Fab site, fab weather (mostly) and fab location but I don't fancy the 1000 mile journey each way with a 4 yr old in the car!! So we're going to La Garangeoire in the Vendee, it will be around a 12 hour journey (car time) plus the crossing, stopover and comfort breaks. We're breaking the journey up with an overnight stay which means we'll be arriving on site around lunch time which will give us plenty of time to set up. I'll let you know what La Garangeoire is like when we get back but I'm hoping we'll enjoy it - the reviews on here are really good! It's set in the grounds of a chateau and is approx 10 miles from the coast. It looks lovely for younger children too, I really can't wait - 11 more sleeps! The price for this time of year is really good - we've got a 'super pitch' which includes a gas bbq, fridge, outdoor rable and chairs, parasol, 2 sun loungers and an hours WiFi per day, and the total cost for 10 nights works out at approx £240!!

2013
March - Pooley Bridge (Pod booked!)
May - Spiers House, Pickering
June - La Garangeoire, Vendee, France
Aug - The Cotswolds?
Well, we went - and it wasn't quite a disaster but not far off! An accident on the motorway turned a 45 minute journey into 2 1/4 hours, by which time the skies had opened and we had to pitch in a downpour. Rained all evening, then the sky completely cleared and the temperature dropped to about 3 degrees, which my daughter's sleeping bag was way to flimsy for, so no-one got any sleep (I had her bag - freezing - and she shared the double with daddy - wriggly!). We had a lovely day out yesterday but came home early evening rather than risk another sleepless night. So off to Amazon for better sleeping bags, and a smaller weekend tent, and try again in a few weeks. Everything else - site (Kingsbury Water Park CCC), kit etc, was perfect.
And despite everything I loved it and so did the kids (OH not so much - better make it a weekend tent I can erect single handed!)
We have just got back from Wyreside Lake Fishery near Lancaster set up our new tent for first time in a downpour on Friday evening, had a great day out at South Lakes Wild Animal Park on Saturday and packed up this morning after breakfast in the rain all in all a great weekend away and the weather didn't effect us.The new tent did great, not used to having sig but the difference is great just got to dry it out now.
Hi, I wondered how you had got on! We went this weekend too. Arrived on Friday evening in a downpour. It eased off a little so we got set up then Friday night was calm and dry - but bloomin cold! I have a 3 seasons sleeping bag, fleecy liner, thermals and hot water bottle but woke up cold at 4am. Had to find a fleece to put on.
Saturday was lovely - but really windy. Went for a very blustery bike ride. I was a bit worried about the wind as the met office were saying it might be gusts of 30mph. We had chosen a pitch between two motorhomes - and with a wall behind us it wasnt too bad but I was really glad when it calmed down. Then the rain started! It was like a monsoon for about 2 hrs. So glad we had EHU and the fan heater.
Saturday night was OK, but the wind woke me up a couple of times. Sunday morning was bright and sunny and we managed to sit outside for the first time all weekend. Then at 11am just as we started to pack up the heavens opened - and we had to pack up in the rain. (Wet tent is on the kitchen floor as a type this - job for tomorrow!)
We have still had a good weekend though. Hubby says this is payback for the scorching weekend we had at Easter. If this had been my first time camping however I think I would be having doubts.
I think you should persuade your OH to have a second try. You dont often get weather that bad twice in a row and anyone would be disheartened by not getting a decent nights sleep.
He's agreed to 2 more trips this year, to give it a fair go, but I've said I'm happy to just take the kids next year and go with my parents to DA weekends if he still hates it. You can't force people to have fun!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
