The only time I have left him for more than one night was when i went to Download festival ; Mum came over and stayed , also to keep an eye on the kids . Now the kids are older I can leave him with them , but apparently he stays upstairs on my bed all the time .
He's very laid back and chilled out , sleeps as soon as he gets in the car , and loves camping
I camp solo with my dog, and he is hooked up to the dog tether most of the time during the day when I am at the tent, including the times when I go to the toilet/shower block and to do washing up.
At night he comes into the tent when I am in the tent and sleeps on his bed, or mine when I am not looking.
When I go to the toilet block, I would normally take him with me, and tie him up outside. Or I may leave him zipped up in the inner tent.
He is a well-behaved little dog, and used to go camping with me.

If we need to go somewhere that aren't doggy friendly we book our Border Collie, Jack, into a day care. Sites can usually recommend somewhere in advance.
For showers, if my OH isn't with us, he gets left in the car, but it's either very early morning or late night.
He's happiest sitting outside watching the goings on of everyone (likes to make sure we're all behaving!), so is okay to be tethered on his ground spike.

My dog Ruby goes camping with me and the family. She has since she was a puppy so is a good camp dog, quiet and generally understands the pitch 'boundary'. When I camp on my own she is happy to wait either in/by the tent whilst I shower, etc.
Family holidays are more difficult as the children want to go places which are not always dog friendly. We tend to split up then - I go off and walk with the dog (suits me anyway ). We have on one occasion found a local kennels who took her in for the day, and this is probably the best bet if you can't take your dog with you.
Before I go away, I track down a local kennel that is happy to take dogs for a day in case I want to go to a stately home or something. I also always check that the local pubs are dog friendly.
When going to the loo, I tie them up outside. When I shower, as it takes a bit longer, I leave them in their cage in the tent, or outside, in the cage, in the shade, if it's warm and dry.
Ooo, I forgot to mention I recently bought a little tent for the dog, however, he is not too keen to use it yet. However, it does provide shelter from the elements when I need to leave him outside while I go for a shower etc...

We leave our dog in the campervan when we go to the shower, run into a shop etc (we know about hot vehicles etc and take care) as we think it is safer than tethering him when maybe a boisterous child might spook/annoy him when we are not there. And, horrors, we have driven to a restaurant and parked outside and left him in it whilst we have had a quick hour for a meal. He will have had a very long walk beforehand and will be happy to settle and sleep. He is a very loved, well exercised, well cared for dog but I think if you follow normal safety rules it is OK. I know others will not agree with my opinion, but it is only my opinion. I should add that we would never leave him for longer and he goes everywhere else with us.
At the end of the day, each dog is different, so yes, it is a matter of trial and error IMHO. Good luck!

I never camp alone, either with hubby/family or with a friend. With hubby and I we take it in turns to shower/use the loo and we only ever go for weekends to relax so we're not going anywhere he can't come, we walk him to the bins, to do the washing up (one of us stands outside) or to the shop. When I'm with a friend we watch each others dogs while we go to the loo and for showers I put him in the boot of the car and open the windows, it's the only time I ever do it and would only ever do it early morning before it was hot and sunny (chance would be a fine thing..lol..)
I am a widow with 2 med dogs, so when camping the lads also come. I admit it is a bit tricky, but the older 8 yr old staffy cross is very steady, the younger mutt at 4 is more flighty. They are tethered so as not to tangle each other when at campsites.
For toilet trips I take them ( ok they go leashed inside with me mostly) For the shower block they are tethered to the towbar of the car for the 15 mins I am away. Mind by this time of the evening they have usually had a 6-10mile "yomp" and are very doggy-relaxed and awaiting their meal. By experiance they know it will follow my return. If wet they await my return from inside the car with 1/2 open windows.
