Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but does having a carpet in a tent with a sig make the inside temperature even hotter or conversely does is somehow make it a bit cooler by reflecting ground heat back?

I am planning on taking a poly tent to France next year and want to know if a carpet would just make things worse.

Cheers,
David

Not sure about temps, we just find it's a bit nicer and quieter under foot than a bare groundsheet!

If I was bothered about temp in tent, I'd take a canvas tent to the continent rather than a poly one.

I think it depends on, wether there is sunshine getting into the tent. If the groundsheet is a dark colour, and the carpet lighter, then the carpet would not heat up as much. But if the groundsheet/carpet is kept in the shadow, I think there will be no difference. But I would think a carpet feels nicer under your bare summer feet - and don't forget, that even continental summer nights and mornings can be surprizingly cool!

When it's hot a non SIG tent really comes into it's own. Forget the carpet....I don't even put down a groundsheet if the grass is good. The sleeping pods have integral groundsheets so they stay dry in whatever weather. If I need more ventilation I'll peg up the draught flaps and let the air in under the flysheet.

We use Outwell carpets, one for the main living area and another in the bedroom pod, they don't add anything at all to the temp inside the tent, but they sure make the place feel real comfy, my main reason for getting them was to help protect the ZiG of the tent, and the SiG of the bedroom pod, which of course they do.

The underside of our ZiG is protected by a 1mm thick Butyl rubber footprint, somE of the campsites in Southern France have hard baked pitches, with tiny pebbles that could soon damage a ZiG or SiG.

We go camping in France during July, when the temps can reach +40DegC so during the day you would not be in the tent, and as I mentioned a carpet is not going to make diference at those temps.
