Hi All, we have decided as a family the best way for us to holiday regularly is to camp. That being said we bought an Outwell Montana 6 and all the associated gubbins.
We are going away this weekend and had a trial run last weekend putting it up in the garden, fairly easy.
However......
The mother-in-law has decided she would like to come with us from time to time and there are already 5 of us, children are 3, 10 & 13.
I'm thinking a pop up tent might be an idea to put in living area on an evening for the in law but was wondering if it would be sturdy enough not being pegged or guyed?
Also if they are would a cheapy from Halfords or Argos suffice for now as i notice Argos have some 2 man Regatta ones for £19.99?
Any advice much appreciated!
What are you sleeping on?
You could get the pop up and use it as a pup tent outside if your children and you feel comfy with that.
Also you have to be carefull how many are sleeping in the tent as some site like it better if you stick to the berth numbers.
If you are on air beds you may be a bit squeezed in.
Does she really need a popup tent in the living area? I may be a bit of a camping philistine here, but if I went away with my son in his tent, I'd just stick my single airbed on the deck or else put up a camp-bed and rely on the single skin of his tent to keep out the weather. I know it's not as warm, but at this time of year, unless you're camping in the mountains, it's really not that cold. Of course your MIL might want the privacy while she's staying with you. My family aren't fussed about all that!
The pop-up tents the senior section were using last time I went to guide camp looked really solid, even before they pegged and guyed them, and inside your tent, it's not going to get any stress as it would outside. They were Quechua, I think.
I have a Highpoint Backpacker 2 for guide camping, and that goes up very quickly and is pretty solid on the ground, especially once I'm in it! But it's not as convenient as a popup.
We are on airbeds apart from the little one who has a readybed, hence it's pretty crammed with the 5 of us.
In hindsight I would have gone for a larger tent but I'm happy enough with our purchase, only reason I didn't get awning is the fact that we are limited to 8m on our first trip.
Thanks for the advice, we are a bit new to this. I never considered the oldest wanting his own room so a pop up would maybe get used when the MIL wasn't going with us.
I know he's 13 but I'm a bit over protective I'm afraid so not sure I would like him out of the main tent.
Hi...ages ago I went to stay with a friend while camping and the kids all bunked in the bedrooms but I slept in one of those beach type tents. Only big enough for the bed but it zipped up and kept me warm through the night.
I have slept without our bedrooms one trip when we invested in new airbeds only to discover they didn't fit in the bedrooms...I found it a little colder than normal.
I have an outwell hartford and because the kids were a bit cold the other week we put my mountain tent (terranova voyager) up inside one of the bedrooms, it was fine.

We did just that this weekend. Due to the horrendous weather on Friday night, and how wet and sodden the ground was, I brought our little Quecha 2 man pop-up tent inside the living room of my Licata 4, and my youngest son slept in there and was more than happy. In fact, he treated it as his own personal space, with all him kit and games in there too. I would not have let him sleep in it if it were outside the main tent. I can see us doing this a lot in future.
There was still room for my table and chairs for the rest of us to sit quietly chatting too.

We do this regularly in the vermont XL. The children take it in turns to sleep in the pop up giving more bedroom space to all. We then fold it away during the day time.
Just been and bought one of the 2 man regatta pop ups that are on sale in Argos, tried it out in the sitting room at home and it will be spot on, we will just fold it away during the day (took me a few attempts to put it away just now, haha!)
Also ordered the extension for the Montana, I think that little bit more room will come in handy during the day.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
