Im after some food ideas for camping..ideally to cook before i go..some cheap meals..i do have an electric cool box but not sure how well it will work! ..is it worth while cooking and freezing? ..last time we went we spent a fortune daily on food trips ..cant afford that this time round and would love some ideas ;O) x
Hi usually if its just for a long weekend we cook and freeze, currys, spag bol, chilli. sometimes make and freeze a couple of small individual sheperds pies they stay frozen for a couple of days in a electric cool box thus also serving the purpose of keeping bacon and sausages butter etc colder

Yep agree with everything gally said. Freezing stuff is a great way to make them last longer, can even freeze your sausages.
when we go for more than a weekend, i shop when i get there, a couple of standard camping meals are - spag bol, chilli, fajhitas, sausages mash and gravy, twin pot chicken - (sweet + sour , mediteranan etc) pasta. and i am a fan of the tesco bargain frozen BBQ pack a fiver for burgers, sausages, chicken wings etc usually does us a couple of meals with a bag of new potatoes and salad.

I'm quite lazy when I go camping (as I'm the only one who cooks!) and I don't worry about calories etc since we spend all day walking or gormet meals, so here are some meals that we take:
Sausage and mash, I steam and freeze the sausages beforehand so that they're quick and easy to cook and mash can be bought ready made from tesco, or if you're really brave Smash is an option, but I'm not a fan! Also whack on some instant gravy and frozen peas!
Chicken stirfry is easy, I dice, cook and freeze chicken in advance, then reheat it in a pan (once it's defrosted obviously!) then chuck in some amoy straight to wok noodles and a sachet of stir fry sauce and it's done. (for the health conscious you can add vegetables too lol!!)
I actually quite like tescos own brand of chicken korma in a can - just heat in a pan and cook some boil in the bag rice, easy!
Cans of soup also make an easy meal, but it's much nicer (and also easy) to make your own soup in advance and freeze it, plus frozen soup has the benefit of keeping the coolbox cool.
mattesons sausage, onions mushrooms, stir fried, chuck in some philly cheese and stick on top of pasta mmmmm.
We managed with just a cool bag for a recent 5 day camping trip and didnt have to go shopping once while we were there, took everything with us
Day 1 was spag bol, day 2 bbq (took frozen meat), day 3 fajitas with remainder of frozen meat, day 4 corned beef hash and beans and day 5 sausage philly pasta...
Thanks for this thread, given me some good ideas too! I seem to do what the majority do as well, frozen currys, tinned chilli, tinned new potatoes, bbq stuff, pasta etc.
Aye, I take some frozen, some long life fresh and some tins and jars and use it in the sensible order.
It really helps to plan it before you go.
7 days dinners might be something like this:
Day 1: Fried potatoes, fresh sausages and beans.
Day 2: Risotto with frozen veggies and cooked chicken out of a packet.
Day 3: Frozen stew of pork, veg and barley, taken from home, should be a bit defrosted by now.
Day 4: Frozen beef mince curry from home. Will be defrosted by now
Day 5: Cold smoked mackerel with frozen peas and Smash.
Day 6: Pasta with sauce out of a jar and smoked sausage.
Day 7: Tinned haggis on toast. Who needs veggies when you've got haggis?
The frozen stuff defrosts as you go and you know that veggie things will be fine for longer. Stuff that can survive the apocalypse can wait 'til the end of the week.
Have one or two bits and bobs for fridge-disaster-related emergencies. Could be: smoked sausage, smoked mackerel, peperami, eggs, tins of soup, tins of rice pudding and custard so you can make sandwiches for dinner but have hot pud.
Don't forget fresh local produce which is easy to cook.
One of our best meals ever whilst camping (motorhome) was on the Isle of Skye. A local fishmonger visits the local community including the campsite with freshly caught produce.
That nights dinner was salmon, new potatoes, cheese sauce, green beans. Our starter was freshly caught scallops!
I havedone this meal under canvas too whilst in Lyme Regis again with fresh local produce.
Oh and those packets of filled pasta and a tub of sauce from supermarkets are great! Easy to cook and last for ages!
Happy camping

These are available in many of the supermarkets, we recently tried the home reared beef in black velvet porter and it was delicious.
I admit they are a bit expensive but are great for end of the week meals when you have run out of other fresh foods, and keep for ages so you could stock up months before your camp.
The one we had would also make a delicious pie if you have the facility to bake a pastry crust (caravan oven or perhaps cobb) or a lovely stew if you add a tin of carrots and peas etc.
The supermarkets dont all sell the full range, morrisons seems to have chilli, tesco had the beef.
------------- Twinwood festival, august bank holiday
when we were away last week i cooked - spag bol , sausage casserole , burgers hotdogs and salad plenty of tuna sandwiches with crisps salad saus rolls etc for lunch . pasta with a stir in sauce and some bacon added to it . pork chops with mash peas and gravy. breakfast was mainly shreddies (for kids) and toast and jam though we did have bacon and egg sarnies once or twice :P
i didnt take any with me we went shopping when we got there but i did take things like oxos and herbs and spices and gravy to save having to buy all that as well .
