Keep it inside the tent if it can be out of site in a bedroom pod or in the car if your car has an alarm. Another way is using a screw in ground anchor and plenty of padlocks.
Remember if you have QR wheels to chain them up as well. See below for an alarm
We nearly always take our bikes camping, I must admit we just leave them outside the tent and have never had a problem... perhaps we are too trusting but we have always found campers look after each other and keep an eye on each others stuff
Depending on the site, we either leave it in the tent or keep it attatched to the roof bar bike attatchment. Never had any problems leaving it in the tent though.

We lock ours onto the roof rack, which is in turn locked onto the car.
We have two very good quality locks per bike and also have some cable locks. We lock the wheels to the frame and to the roof rack and lock the bikes to each other too.
They're not unnickable, but it would take a dertermined thief ant they'd make alot of noise!
For me, the main reason for spending a small fortune on a folding mountain bike with full suspensions was to enable me to lock up the bike in my car when not in use.
I usually see bikes being chained up to railings or fence when their owners are not about. However, quite a few that belong to the younger kids are just left lying about.

we only take our kids bikes but never lock them up, if we go off site, we usually just tuck them behind the tent, but may feel differently if the were adult expensive bikes.

You can't really do much more than lock them, I use a long cable combination lock so if there is a tree or post to lock it to, so much the better. Combination lock is good with no keys to worry about.
We lock the kids bikes in the boot when we go to bed and if we go out during the day we chain them to the kitchen stand.
There is a site we go to 2 or 3 times a year which has bikes regularly stolen during the night, it is people coming onto the site not the people staying there. There are signs up warning campers about this. Last August while we were there someone had a mountain bike stolen. You can never be too careful.
I think a folding bike is a good solution, somthing like one of the Dahon 20" wheel bikes, there are some real good folders out there, like Airnimal, Brompton, Birdy etc, but like everthing in life, you pays yer money. That way you can just leave it in the car etc, when not being use.

My thought exactly when I bought my Dahon.
