Thanks all for advice and lovely pics.
He is a large english pointer pup and he is such a sweetheart and fortunately not prone to barking. There are 2 kids in the back in car seats so I can't get much kit in with them unfortunately.
He is in a crate in the house (he loves it) so I think for longer trips we will take a folding crate and for shorter ones use the boot of the car (bearing in mind safety issues re heat etc)

Sorry but I would never leave my dogs in the car over night has to be in the tent with me then I no they are safe.
