Just wanted to share a success story about our dogs first camping trip as I know there are a few people on here with new dogs who were worried about camping with them. Just to give a bit of background we have a chilled out greyhound who is such an easy camping dog but we added to the mix a crazy, mad springer spaniel. She has 'issues' with weeing when excited/nervous so didn't camp at all last year. The problem is a lot better but not quiet resolved so we decided to run the risk and take her camping. She is crate trained so that made things easier. The site (Beadnell Bay) was very quiet and was right across the road from the beach, great site (review submitted) so was perfect for her. We stopped for 2 nights and walked the dogs for 2/3 hours solid each day which tired them out. We used the crate to try and contain her excitment and this seemed to work. The beach is so deserted they can run for miles and paddle in the puddles and the sea without anyone else in sight. We gave her her meals in a Kong rather than a dish to keep her busy, and also took some new toys with us to keep her occupied. We put the cage in the bedroom with us at bedtime and she settled ok (think the sea air knocked her out). She moaned a bit during the night when we got up for the loo but quickly settled again once we came back to bed. She escaped under the tent a couple of times (next tent is to be SIG lol) but as the site was so quiet it wasn't a massive issue and we just went out and brought her back inside quickly. She did wee once, it was in her bed so at least our sleeping bags remained dry which was my main concern. Overall it was a massive success and I don't think we could of picked a better site for her first camp. We came home at lunch time today and she has pretty much slept solid ever since, she is exhausted lol. Good luck to everyone else who is taking their dogs on their first camping trip this summer.
We have camped previously with our old dogs, but having lost them both last year we have a new bouncy and I mean very very bouncy Labradoodle, he's 8 months now and great dog when it's just us, but gets very excited around new folk, he will of course always be on lead or tethered, apart from when we walk him on quiet end of beach, so excited and apprehensive at the same time.
Glad your first camp went so well, camping is an ideal dog lovers holiday.
------------- I'm working class, I do what I have to do, to get by.
We are wondering how our first camping trip with our 3 year old Boxer will go..got visions of a few wet beds...his...he is crate trained but he has never been in a tent before...he had a bath tonight ...and shook from head to toe ! all fingers crossed

Bowies, sorry to hear about your old dogs passing away, I imagine having a young mad dog will be a bit of a contrast for you. Our springer is VERY bouncy as well, springer by name, springer by nature lol. We were really worried how she would be which is why we only booked fo 2 nights- but to be honest if the weather had stopped nice we probably would of stopped an extra night- the long walks and the sea air knocked knocked her out.
Vonc- do you have the excited weeing problem as well? we took 3 jumbo rolls of kitchen roll with us, expecting to have to use it all, pnly used half a roll and also extra bedding, just incase but didnt need to use it.
He does on occasion ... Foot been caught a few times ... If he could get on the bed with us he would be fine all night ... But he is not a small dog ... Sometimes I think he wets his bed in protest ! Not very often ... So taking pro fleece when he is in his cage and extra for .. Just in case .. He might surprise us

We have a 7month jacks x westie and we are all off to our 4th camping trip this year with her this weekend .She has been good as gold. We have a tether for her and keep her on her lead at all times as she is very bouncy and wants to meet everyone! She is always the first to bed each night, and last up in morning, it's a hard life this camping lark lots of smells and people to meet wears her out.

We had a large black greyhound last September and are hoping to take him camping this year. He is very well behaved (except he pretends to be deaf when it suits). What does everyone do about travelling with their dogs, in particular large ones? There is no way all the gear AND the dog would fit in the car, as we have two kids in the back as well so he couldn't sit on the back seat. I'm not sure a roof box would be the solution as they don't look all that big and plus it would have to have the fittings added by Honda at rip-off cost no doubt before we could buy one. So what do we do? Take two cars? Just wondered what everyone else does, not necessarily looking for a solution, as we will probably just end up taking the two cars anyway and maybe asking someone else to come with us to justify it!
Edit: by the way, I wasn't suggesting putting the dog in the roof box! Rather the clothes and bedding etc.
Donething, we had to take 2 cars with us. When we just had the greyhound we managed to fit in but its just 2 adults, no kids. When we got the springer we knew it would be 2 cars because we only have a ford focus so didnt think they would both fit in the boot space together.
If your greyhound is anything like ours, she is such an easy camping dog. She loves nothing better than being fed and then stretching out on the sleeping bags for a couple of hours- or in the sun if it warm. Just making sure she is warm overnight is my only concern with her, cos shes a wimp and doesnt like the cold.

I have a Vw Golf and my Lurcher goes in the boot with some stuff under his bed ; fold flat bbq ,tent, roll mats , sleeping bags etc . I took my daughter , son and his gf a few years ago ( all in their teens ) and we got everything in the car and the Thule Ranger roof bag . On that occasion we took the Icarus 400 and a 2 man tent .
I think the thing to remember is that people do tend to take too much stuff with them when camping ; things you don't need or can do without , or even get when you arrive . It's not like we all camp hundreds of miles from civilisation .
I was totally ruthless a few years ago , got rid of loads of stuff and although not minimalist , I try not to take too much . I like to pitch the tent , empty the car , a quick drink , then out with the hound . Especially if I stay at Beadnell as my dog loves the beaches there ; an evening walk round the Bay is a favourite
