Soz to butt in but the ones I had you just had to roll them out and open a little valve and they inflate themselfs, from what I understand they actually have some sort of filling in them which expands with the air but im pretty new to all this so could b completly wrong lol.
------------- If it fits in my backpack or trolly bag im takin it :-) who needs a car to go camping
Self inflating Mattresses, as in SIMs, are made of open-cell foam.
The foam is covered by a fabric cover, and has air valve(s) to let air in and out.
When not in use, the air is expelled from the foam, to reduce its packed volume.
When in use, one opens the air valve(s), enabling the foam structure to expand and regain its form.
Some mattresses require one to blow into it a couple of times to aid the expansion process.
The effectiveness of the SIM is largely dependent upon its thickness. The thicker the mattress the more comfortable it will be. Therefore, it is usually advisable to get the thickest that one can afford.

It sounds like a camp bed with a SIM is the way to go, like many others I'm done with buying airbeds that deflate in the night. With a family that's 4 beds and 4 sims I now need to buy : (
They are not for me though, as the pack size is too bulky.
