Hope everyone who was out in the elements on Thur/Fri are now home safe and all dried out. Feel very sad for anyone caught up in the floods in Wales.
Our tent has been up dried and now all tucked up ready for its next trip. Hope that no one had too much damage and has not been put of by the windy experience. I guess its all part of camping in this country!
A couple of friends of ours currently have what's left of their tent hanging out to dry. Looks kinda sad. Oh well - they survived and it hasn't put them off camping.
I can't help except to keep thinking how many loosely secured gazebos would have been lost to the wind had we had the really strong wind over the Diamond Jubilee weekend!
I came home last Wednesday and missed the strong wind, thankfully.
However, my previous tent got damaged beyond repair when I went camping in Sep 11 and got caught by the tail end of Tropical Storm Katia when it hit UK.
When I was looking for a replacement tent, being able to withstand windy and stormy conditions was top on the list of "must have" feature.
Hence I opted for a Dutch pyramid canvas tent with steel poles, namely the Hypercamp Escala 4. This type of tents is being billed as "storm-resistant" due to its sloping shape and design features, such as the number of pegging points to make the tent very secure in the wind.
It has performed very well in stormy conditions so far, and is a lot quieter than my previous tent in the wind. The dog agrees the new tent is much cosier and quieter, as he is seldom startled by wind-related noises nowadays.

I'm surprised that you dont see many more pyramid and bell tents in the UK given our weather conditions. I would definately go for a canvas tent in the future, though the lake tent has stood up well to bad weather so far.
We are now looking at canvas. Although our Vango held up to the weather incredibly well with no damage, the noise was very bad. Only down side to canvas ... does it not take longer to dry out??? We also witnessed several flying gazebos!!!
So glad you are home safe and dry. Those poor souls in Wales didn't fair so well.
We now have canvas (and deltas since our little canvas turned into a balloon when we were packing up in Padstow in March) so we are quiet and secure no matter what the weather. Yes canvas take a little longer to dry out,but to be honest, for the security and lack of flapping they give you in bad weather,it's a small price to pay (and we live in a caravan,so you can imagine what it's like with a wet tent). and at the moment the prices of second hand canvas tents is mostly peanuts compared to polyester.

and lots more besides
The downside of having a canvas tent is the need to dry out the tent once I get home.
Not a big issue as I have a garage, and it needs to be turned regularly.
However, I can imagine that could cause an issue for those without the space to dry out a tent.
