A few weeks ago I was reunited with a tent of mine from about 9-10 years ago,a Eurohike Hike 220. And I mentioned on here that I was tempted to give it to a family member.
Well today I saw my 12 year old nephew, and asked him if he wanted it. To which he gave me a funny look and said, "errr no, why would I want a tent? I have never even tried camping."
That was my cue (of sorts). I came home packed up my Atakama, the 220, and the handy Hammock I won via here that just happened to arrive as I was about to leave. And then returned to set my plan into action. He wasn't interested in what I was doing at first. But some acting from myself (worthy of an Oscar. Even if I say so myself) convinced him the wind was making the tent flip over. So could he come and help me erect my Atakama? To cut a long story short, he loved it. And we even had a little celebratary drink and chocolate while sat inside. I then got him, to use his new skills picked up erecting the dome of the Atakama, as well as connecting the inner to the outer, on the Hike 220 seeing as it is also a dome tent. (hence why I took the Atakama and not the Rock.) Before telling him that the 220 was his, but he has to share it with his sister and brothers. And obviously he needs to remember they will need teaching how to erect a tent. A lesson from their older brother maybe? A quick lesson on how to fold a tent, ensuring he paid attention as he needs to pass on his new skills. And off he walked all excited, with his new tent all packed up, ready to take home. Not bad considering he had no interest in owning a tent this morning.
