Excuse my ignorance but Im new to camping. I've been looking at the Camping & Caravanning Club site and I see there are hardstanding pitches available. Is it possible/advisable to put a tent on one of these pitches?
Not a cc site, but we had an "all weather" pitch at clippesby this year, and a fantastic choice it was, no mud under the tent when packing up, and clean all around too, plus no taking muck in and out the tent. Definitely recommended from us. Gaz

Just take long, hard ground pegs. And an extra groundsheet to put underneath- we have a footprint for our tents, but still plan to take an exta piece of tarp/groundsheet as another layer still

AS said, hard ground, or "rock" pegs.
And I definitely second the additional footprint.... See here...
I believe, but haven't been on one, that most hardstandings are the more, rounded, pea gravel type surface, which should be even better than that in my link.
If you can guarantee protecting your main SIG/ZIG, then I would recommend hardstanding for a tent, particularly out of season.
I camped at Devizes C&CC site twice in the winter, and was put on the same hard-standing pitch, as its grass section was free draining and the least likely to turn boggy in wet weather.
I parked my car on the gravelled section instead.
I would suggest for the OP to contact the site in question and enquire.

It depends what's it made of. Clippesby ones are ok, but Some at other sites have quite sharp gravel / big stones and I would not put a tent sig/zig on those without something underneath, then again we got a hole from a grass pitch! I agree with dk168 (a voice of experience you can trust) and you check it out with the site.
Awww, thanks for the compliment, however, I am only a youngster when compared with the seasoned campers such as Jelboy who recently celebrated his 10th anniversary on UKCS!

Did it once and will never, never do it again. Ground is uncomfortable to walk on in the tent, had to keep my shoes on indoors. I felt it wasted my holiday.
What I meant in my first post in this thread was that, I was put on a hard-standing pitch at Devizes C&CC during winter, and put up my tent on the grass section, and parked my car on the gravelled section instead.
Dec 2011, the car was parked on the gravelled section on the left of the pic:
Feb 2012, same pitch, showing the car on the gravelled section:
