First post for a long time. We have finally succumbed to taking 2 cars now when we go camping (until I get my next company car WITH tow bar next time )
So suddenly we have space to take something a bit more substantial than our usual fold-flat BBQ and I am looking for some recommendations.
We've seen people with the gas Cadac's which seem to be really versatile. But on the downside I think we would need a different gas bottle to our current campingaz.
And I actually like the ceremony of charcoal (and to burn a few twigs / cracklelogs where permitted)
We could also fit in a Weber, or similar now, but not sure what size / model.
Then there's the Hibachi type which seem to have a few nice touches.
We are a family of 4 so need something that will cook a few things at once. The OH doesn't really do burgers and sausage which usually means cooking fish in foil, skewers etc.
Does anyone have any strong recommendations. Something that you've used time and again and never fails you?
Other considerations are flexible cooking height (if charcoal) ease of cleaning, build quality and budget of say - £150 max (but less if we go charcoal)
All thoughts very welcome as I want to get this decision right
We have the Weber Smokey Joe for camping and have often cooked for 5 with ease, we do skewers and things wrapped up as well. Cannot alter the height, but I regulate temp with the vents/amount of oxygen getting to coals
We have the 57cm One-Tough at home.
2017
April - New Forest(9)
May - Dorset (9)
August - Camping Le Pin Parasol, Vendee (18)
October - East Mersea (8)
and five nights in the one man tent!
We have just got the weber smokey joe too. Really pleased with it. Did family of 5 ok. They do a jumbo joe too thats a bit bigger. The weber go anywhere was what I wanted as it is a more packing friendly shape, but elf and safety apparently made them take it of the eu market cos of the lack of heat protection for the handle.

Have just ordered a Smokey Joe 'premium' and carry bag. Will be able to fit a couple of practices in at home to get used to it before the next camping trip.
We cannot fault the Weber BBQs, we have used and still do The Weber Go Anywhere which is terrific. However, we recently bought a Lotus grill from Riversway, expensive but absolutely brilliant. It uses a cupful of charcoal only and reaches temperature in minutes, we love it so much the Weber may be relegated to the garage.

Like said, anything Weber is bomb proof and will last decades if looked after. If you don't have adjustable height you can move food to the outer edges which works fine. I have the Go Anywhere and its one of the best things I've bought, sadly no longer available. I have seen second hand ones selling for over £100 on eBay, in fact a new one sold in April for £160 including delivery !!! Think I paid £40 for mine.
Yes Mike hard to believe but true. I am a big Weber fan for home use I have the 57mm "One Touch" and a small (I think it is the 47mm) the latter one is now almost 20 years old but being able to cook in a matter of minutes is brilliant.
