Here's a tip that'll make inserting them much easier and more effective: Roll the earplug tightly between finger and thumb, and quickly suck it before putting it in your ear. Hold it in with your thumb until it expands.
Wetting the earplugs first makes it so much easier... try it and see! Motorcyclists have been doing this for ever. 
I tried this once and got wax in my mouth!
