Hmmm, not sure where to post this but just wondering if anybody else has thought about this? Basically, my idea is to make a simple frame and some blackout fabric to make a 2 berth tent inside my Discovery 3. With the seats folded, the load length is 1.95m without even moving the drivers seat forward. Width is at least 1.2m, wider towards the front.

Why do it? Well, it makes camping possible when the weather is worse - no issues with pitching in a gale force wind, guaranteed to stay dry, warmer and freedom to camp wherever safe and legal, though I was just thinking of campsites.

Anybody else done this?

Is it for security reasons, so you can't be seen? Or is it for warmth, or both. People do go camping in a car, there's been a thread about it recently

car camping

and search for some van dwelling blogs online, great source of info

No, not for security reasons. More against the weather - I especially like the idea of a bit more certainty knowing that we will be warm and dry whatever happens. I wasn't thinking about adding any awnings or anything on the back.

You don't really need a tent inside a car, all you need is to do is make up some curtains for the windows, work out some way of securing them, perhaps with velcro & put a mattress in the back. Using this idea some construct micro campers making up removable sink/cooker units.

Only problem maybe that(I think)some campsites are funny about allowing sleeping in cars so you might have to work around this somehow.

Cars are freezing to sleep in, a tent would be much warmer

Why put a tent in a car? I often sleep in my mpv - as Jack+John said, curtains at the windows, seats folded down, mattress in the back, ehu cable designed for tents and small fan heater on low in the front if it's chilly. The only problems are having space to cook/make a brew and get dressed/undressed in comfort.

I think there is a company that makes silver insulated covers for the windows of most landrovers if you google around. Or cheap way is buy several windscreen silver hear reflectors and butcher them

You could put a tension rail across the car just behind the seats, tuck a length of black of navy fabric over it and leave it long enough to hang down like a curtain, then at the back of the car you could grab some of the fabric with Clingons and suspend it from the roof of the car, by whatever is available (hand rails?)

Clingons
