Well it appears that I will soon be moving over to the dark side as I have just bought a lovely 1978 Eriba Pan Familia caravan. It looks like the bell tent will be up for sale in the spring as I really can't afford to keep both.
Have to say that was a surprise to read. Then I looked at pictures of said caravan and it makes more sense. They look like great little things. We call our Esterel the 'posh tent'. As it is not quite a caravan and not quite a tent.
Don't get rid of all your tents, you may find there are times when you still want a one, if only to stick the kids in.
Allie. I was a bit surprised to read that. But as long as your getting out there it really doesn't matter what you use so long as you enjoy it. Good luck with caravan and enjoy. Geoff.
We've only been campers for 18 months or so, and we've already been looking at "alternatives". We took a trip to the black country to look at TTs, and have done a lot of googling at classic/vintage vans, as Muckerette fell in love with one of those cardboard French Foldaways!!
All very informal at this stage, and I certainly don't envisage any changes in 2014, but I'm pretty sure that day will come!
If I had to put money on it, I strongly suspect we will go from poled tent to inflatable, then a quirky vintage van. What I wouldn't put money on, is any dates, at this stage. Being late developers, tents and tenting are still very much exciting and enjoyable for us, but I think we are both fully aware that they will, one day, become "hard work".
I don't think the term "natural progression" is an unfair assessment.... I think it will "come to us all" at some stage!
As has been said, "If it extends your camping career..."!

TUT TUT Mucker. That's you crossed off some caravaners Christmas card list. Got to say though Ive had 3 static caravans in the past and loved that experience. Now doing tenting, again loving that. But if I had the money when I retired I think I would like to get a motorhome and just chase the sun round Europe for as long as I could. Geoff
And then of course there's me! Started in a tent June 2012 and hated it, persevered and loved it, made mistake of camping Easter 2013 in the snow, fed up with lack of home comforts so bought a one year old caravan and tow car three weeks later. Sold the caravan August and back to tent!
Now I find myself looking at trailer tents, which is where we started 2013!

WE ahve had 2 tin tents then 2 TT then this year bought a Tin tent again...but we cant part with our 2004 TT as the kids and grandkids love there fortnights hols with us lol What evr you have just enjoy camping

Just found my old thread as I was browsing. After over 5 years of caravanning I'm back to camping under canvas. The caravan has been sold and I'm once again the proud owner of a bell tent. Equipment seems to have moved on somewhat since I've been away. Any must haves?
I always said I would never have a caravan. When we decided to move from the TT we went for a FC which was great for 6 years. Unfortunately age has caught up with us and whilst not going over to a caravan we have now got a MH. Horses for courses I say. Its what ever keeps you out there enjoying the great outdoors.
If it ever comes to where a tent is not practical for us ( eh?), we would probably get a wee campervan.
That would probably be when I can't walk or use my hands.
We used a not-very-big tent for a number of years but OH found sleeping on the ground difficult, also the lifting stuff in and out of the car. We sat on campsites and watched folk using small campervans. Then after a holiday where it rained solidly for the last 3 days, we went and ordered a new 'van. And that was 7 years ago, we still love it, it is used a lot as second car too.
