Hi, Aldi are offering 2 of the "Look what we found" products Sunday 26th Jan. Tees Valley Chilli and Durham meatballs. £ 1.79 each (270g). These can be boiled in the bag, in a pan or if you are desperate, eat them cold. They keep for about a year, I always keep a few in the car boot. On the same page they have Salmon Fillets for £ 1.79 (200g) which I have had a few times. For traditionalists, Spam with Bacon £ 1.29 (200g) if weight is not a problem. Does anyone have any other recommendations that can go in a backpack to keep body and soul together??? Cheers4now,
For backpacking they look a bit light on calories? The chilli is only 194kcals a pack so by the time you've added something else the weights just going up. A dried pasta n sauce macaroni cheese weighs half as much, costs half as much with more than double the calories. If you use a pot cosy rather than simmering shouldn't use any more fuel to cook.
In winter finish with powdered custard & cake bars for plentiful calories & a warm night's sleep.
I agree with the calories, but as its only usually for a day or two I gladly swop Calories for taste! I have had enough of the days going for bland healthy stuff and favour something to savour now. After all you can make up the energy boost at the first pub you get to:-) I never thought about the powdered Custard, I think thats worth having a go, Cheers
I'm assuming you can add water to the custard powder? What a great idea. I put powdered milk in porridge, with honey to taste. Carry it in a tupperware box and you have a nice breakfast.

Boiling water - yep. If I'm too full I have it for breakfast. I love mac n cheese. Will eat it every day even on a multi day trip. I like to add small tin of tuna, mayo & sweetcorn if just out for the weekend.
Perhaps someone on UKCS is willing to start a business on making boil-in-a-bag camping food, using sous-vide method of cooking/preservation!

Never mind food for back packing, they sound good for any type of camping. I shall have a look Sunday.

I take the Tees Valley Chilli Con Carne camping, together with Tilda rice. The Tilda rice is meant to be heated in a microwave but I heat it up in a frying pan on the stove.
That's what I do Bernie,or put a little water in the rice, then heat it through. I can't see why microwaveable foods done this way.

I have not tried the Tilda rice (put off by the instructions to microwave it on the packet). Can you cook it in a pan with a little water like you do Uncle Ben's Express rice and is it any better?
