Hi

Just wondering how/what people use for infants to sleep at night in a tent? My lo is now 19months old and starting to rock his travel cot really hard so thinking of taking him out of this.

What do you use/recommend instead?

Many thanks for any help as newbie at camping

We used the Kampa airlock junior (with fleece blankets on the floor and also underneath them on the bed for insulation) when ours were small and would highly recommend them.

As they got older (and didn't need containing as much, we moved them all to SIMs.

We used this
We put a SIM or picnic blanket underneath and then extra cot bed duvet/blankets on top. We got a lot of use from it staying at friends and family aswell as camping. Son grew out of it aged 5. Lots on e-bay second hand. Covers are washable.

It seems ready beds aren't all made equal - we bought two on the same day. One burst by splitting along a seam before a child slept in it. The other burst the next morning (apparently, my kids like to jump on them!)

Just a cautionary tale!

We used the kampa one last year for around 3 weeks in total... Little one loved it. He was 8 months old the first trip and then 11 months when we went to France. Only down side... He was in with us...as we wanted to make sure he was warm enough.

We did take two just in case we had blow outs etc... But they are small enough when deflated..

This is what we used also. Never used a travel cot so was using this from 9 months. Lasted for years (about 4) until my daughter managed to burst it.

I find ready beds are a bit rubbish (well the 3 we've had at different locations) They seem to burst really easily or maybe we have just been really unlucky

Didn't do camping until 1 & 2 were 3 years old but we took no. 3 (& all the rest of us) last year and he was 1.5.

He slept in July and August in a winter gro bag - so 2.5 tog rather than the 1.0 tog that he was in at home in the summer time. Had roll mat, then flat cot sheet to cover some of the roll mat and the gro bag on top.

The main problem we had was that it was light when he went to bed and as he had a sleep in the day he was not tired enough to sleep. So the bedroom pod zip kept 'opening by itself'. The annoying thing was not a 2 way zip and so the zipper opener was at the bottom.

Oh I do love toddler sleeping chat. I post about it here every year. My boy is three now and I'm not going to worry this year. Last year he was two and a bit and I got in a right pickle about it.

I think it depends on your child and whether they will lie down to sleep. Mine is the kind that when a little bit over tired (ie. All the time when camping!) will fanny about endlessly. Looking back, perhaps I ought to have just kept him up later until he was begging for bed. Wriggling was an issue to. Once he was asleep he would wriggle backwards and end up out of his bag and then could get cold depending on the weather.

I did two things last year:

1. Just take the travel cot because it made everything easier and was with the space and bulk. Kept him contained, kept him off the child ground, felt right for him, stopped him wriggling out of his covers. I did this when he was one and a half too and it was so handy to have a place to pen him in sometimes.

2. Sewed together a sheet cover for a small sized self-inflating mat and put the mat inside a mummy style bag and used the hood to contain a little pillow and make a sort of barrier that helped prevent him wriggling out. I did often have to lie down with him to settle him off though.

We picked up a ready bed in the charity shop but he just wouldn't go in it. Goodness knows why. We're going to go this week and I'm just going to share a double bag with him. I'll keep him up later too. I think my advice is if in doubt, take the travel cot. If you have a 'conk out anywhere' child, anything will do.
