Hi, we bought a second hand kampa studland 8 a few weeks ago. The people we were buying it off were in a rush and so were we so we naively trusted their word that it is all ok and they had just been camping in it a couple of weeks before. I'm really angry at myself for the schoolboy error of not pitching it to have a look and to compound it I've since forked out on a towbar and trailer. Due to a combination of small garden, work commitments and bad weather, today was the first opportunity we've had to put it up at the local park.
As soon as we started unrolling it, it was obvious it had been put away quite damp. On putting it up we can see the outside roof and window blinds are covered in black mould spores.
We took it home and scrubbed a mild milton solution on the roof but it didn't look to improve. So currently we are soaking it bit by bit in the bath with mild milton. We'll then put in the garden and hose down. We'll then reseal it all and test if still waterproof with the hosepipe.
We are wondering whether the tent will be ruined and whether we are best taking it on the chin and getting a different one.
So in your opinion, would putting all the outer polycotton canvas in the bath with milton have had any adverse effects if we reseal it after?
Also is there anyway to get rid of the black residue. I've seen people mention HG Mould Spray and Graingers mould spray on here. Would that be worth a go?
As for resealing, is fabsil suitable for polycotton?
MILTON OR ASDA'S OWN BRAND LITTLE ANGELS STERILISING FLUED, NO NEED TO SOAK IN BATH, JUST WIPE IT ON OR SPRAY ON, WAIT A FEW MINUTES TILL IT KILLS THE MOULD, THEN RINSE OFF. I THINK YOU MUST HAVE DILUTED IT TOO MUCH.
We had already put in the bath with diluted milton and without the ZIG - it was a challenge to lift it out!
Anyhow we've put it back up and given a good soak inside and out. The marks look a lot better but there are a couple of stubborn spots that we will try with HG Mould remover that some people have mentioned on the forums.
We will want to reseal, even if looks waterproof with the hosepipe for peace of mind. On a polycotton what is the best sealer to use? I've seen some posts warning away from Fabsil on polycotton as it is silicone based and others say Fabsil Gold is good. Another we have seen is Nikwax.
What sealer would people recommend we use on a polycotton? We're not to fussed about colour staining - being mould free for my asthma and waterproof is the most important :-)
Actually re reading all posts, i think we'll give it a good soaking once it has fully dried and so if any leaks. Then if there are we'll look at resealing as read here it can stop the tent's natural waterproofing where the fabrics expand from working.
Hi Personally I wouldnt use seam sealer on a polycotton let it seal naturally although you may need to give it a few soakings. Also Milton will kill the mould/mold spores but doesnt always get rid of the stains you will need to rinse it well to get rid of any excess milton and also the smell

Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
