In a couple of weeks we are going on our second ever camping trip, this time for 7 nights. We are staying on a haven site so will eat out a couple of nights but would like to make the most of the fact we have a butane cooker (2 hobs and a grill)
Now we do have a coolbox but I'd like to avoid taking raw meat or food that refrigeration is essential, I should also note that my youngest is dairy intolerant so other then uht milk for coffee dairy is to be avoided.
We know things like couscous, pasta and sauce are an easy option as is corned beef hash but we are struggling for other ideas
We are happy with toast/crumpets or maybe a simple fry up for breakfast and instant noodles or somthing easy for dinner
Hi gtanny, we bought a flat cooking tray that covers both gas burners which gave a bigger surface to cook on. We pre boiled new potatoes then sliced them up and cooked them with garlic, onions, bacon lardons and served it with baked beans - very tasty!
We also used it to cook a vegetable stir fry. I took spray olive oil so it didn't spill everywhere.
Hope you enjoy your trip!
Were in the same boat as you although we have done several long weekend trips, but will still be our first week camping and it's a site similar to Haven.
We are planning on lots of one pot meal things, my favourite being beans, meat (sausage or bacon), potatoes and maybe some gravy powder for flavour or just random spices.
For breakfast we would normally have porridge but we have managed a fry up before, cooking the meat (bacon and sausage first) then moving the 2 together to keep warm on one burner, doing the eggs on the other and then moving the eggs over when done and finishing off with beans.
For lunch, we tend to do soup, hotdogs or sandwiches or super noodles.
Dinner is normally a one pot meal type thing, casseroles are easy, a big pot, a few tinned veg and some meat, throw it all in, add a bit of gravy and water and just wait. We do BBQ's as well, we find there is always somewhere local you can grab meat if you want fresh meat and veg and a haven site will have a shop that will sell stuff.
One thing I would advise is just use your hobs on the oven at home for a weekend and see how you get on.
Enjoy though, we have found some great meals just messing around and our huge camping pot is the best thing we ever brought for camping and for in the kitchen as well :D
Cheers for the help so far its given us a few extra ideas... Were going to go to the supermarket and see what is on offer that makes us want to try it.
Freeze everything-orange juice, milk, prepared meals, bacon, sausages etc before you go. These will also help keep your coolbox cold and last a bit longer depending on your cool box. we've got a Kampa Evo (no longer available) and it'll keep stuff cold for several days with a 2 litre water bottle frozen in the bottom and several of bits frozen.
Last weekend we tried keeping the milk along with the beer and wine in a bucket of cold water out of the sun and it worked. It also helped keeping the cool box in the shade too.
Someone else where on here suggested to someone to get a camping cook, there are several available on Ebay, Amazon, in The Works etc. Lots of good ideas. Make your own camping cook book, with ideas and recipes you've picked up.
I cook sausages, black pudding and burgers then freeze them before I go away.
Whilst frying an egg for breakfast I put a sausage and/or slice of black pudding in the pan to warm up at the same time.
For tea, put a can of potatoes and a can of baked beans together in a pan and place burgers or pies on top before putting the lid on.
I also take precooked curries and/or chilli con carne. Whilst these are heating up in a pan I heat up a sachet of Tilda precooked rice in the frying pan.
Many of the larger sites have a facility selling take away meals, so I often purchase a portion of chips to accompany my main meal.
