I imagine that 40 miles of cycling a day alone might be a little dull.

I will look into the guided cycle holidays though I think - it has sown a seed in my mind

When I was younger, single and childless I used to cycle tour on my own and had an amazing time - there were always people to chat to at the hostels in the evening and often I would meet cyclists and cycle with them the next day. When I was at Uni a female friend of my cycled round Iceland on her own camping and had an amazing time. There is an incredible sense of freedom and accomplishment doing these things on your own. Im still very attached to my ancient Dawes touring bike that doesnt leave the garage as often as it should!

I mentioned the Josie Dew books in an earlier post - she cycled all over the place on her own - Japan, New Zealand, USA, Europe - plan a long weekend not too far from home and give it a go, if you get bored you've only wasted a weekend and if not you've got an amazing new hobby that will get you super fit and start you on some amazing adventures
